California preview

Wasn't overly impressed with the car. Here are some photos from the private event at Ferrari of Silicon Valley. Never got an invite for the FofSF showing so either they haven't had it or I'm not cool enough for their invite.

Thanks FofSV for the great event!

PS: the first photo is in good fun for the sales guy (Larry). He and I got into it a bit and I know he didn't like a few of my harder questions. I know he has to sell the car and appreciate where he was coming from.

My score card (as it compares to Ferrari standards, expectations):

Sound: B
Interior: A
Gear Box: A+ from what I was told, I will find out soon enough
Exterior Design: B-

The placement of the SN was cool, right as you open the hood in the front there is a big stamp with it. If you are driving an F430 everyday already I just don't see you buying this.

I dont know Andrew. I guess I need to see it to confirm. But, Hard Top Convertable? YES, LOVE IT. Give me a shiftgate and all is perfect. Plus the engine in where it belongs.

You have to see that car in a dark color.

Sunday at the Marin Sonoma Concours in San Rafael F of SF had one in metallic black with a black interior and optional gray tinted wheels.

It was absolutely stunning. The lines just come alive.

I was told that their orders for red were miniscule! They doubt many will sell in red.

The audience is not considered to be sporty as in 360/430 style. So the darker colors for subtlety may prevail.

BTW the optional wheels are much better looking.

Deliveries about July 1, and new order deliveries now are available for Feb/March 2010. Don't think there is a large order book on them.

I find it interesting that there were no Gran Turismo's on the floor to detract from the similarity of style!

The emptied out all the Maseratis. The only sign of the marquee was the name on the wall.

And Sunday they had only a QP there next to the CA.

They had an 8C Alfa there for sale at $260,000! They can't unload it!

If you see the California next to the Gran Turismo the similarity is outstanding.

So for sure Ferrari is making a ton of $ on that car. Granted the GT has a steel frame and the CA is aluminum, but a nearly 100% price difference does not equate.

The Alfa 8Cs were all presold so this must have come back quickly as a P/X (which is not at all uncommon).

Still very much on the fence on the California. If it had a 6 speed manual that would definitely be a plus.

@GCalo,

Funny you mention the GT and price premium. I hinted to that. Answer was, it has a drop top and 7 speed gear box that is faster than you blink.

F of SF is a factory owned dealership.

This came in to them and they never sold it!

It has not been titled.

That's because its a "demo" car for test drives. The FofSV California in my photos is the same story. Yes, a buyer can now test drive an F-car.

IF they ever improved the 599 to have that drop-top I'd go there in the price diff would be minor.

CA is warming me a bit, but then, sigh, it quickly turn to 'flaws/[something]' vs price and all excitement goes south.

What should be added in that first pic is: Ya' they are excited becuase they were invited....when they leave the real dialogue starts...and with it out goes excitement.

If you had seen Sammy Hagar's 599 Sunday you'd change your mind.

It is stunning.

prefer the 599 over the CA, even with the upgraded mechanicals.

+1, woudl defintely take the 599 GTB over the CA. If they ever did a limit run 599 Spider I would be headed straight to Maranello with deposit in hand.

+1 on the 599GTB over the California. When it comes to these two models, there is no thought that has to go into that choice for me - 599 definitely!!!

I have been told by a senior executive at Ferrari last fall that they have no plans to make a spider version of the 599 GTB. At the time he was pushing the 599 FXX as the next big evolution of the 599.

After seeing Sammy Hagar's two tone 599 last w/e I can tell you that the car really does not need a drop top but it might look nice.

His car was tastefully done. Very, very nice.
