612 vs California

Excuse me if this comes across as inappropriate, being this is a "current V8s" section.

But I was wondering if any one had the luxury of owning a 612 and a California. If so, how would you compare the two. Pros, cons, driving experience, handling, torque, balance, fuel consumption, the ride, the maintenance. Many thanks!

i have a 612 OTO for 3+ years now and it is great, but i also drove a cali across italy for 3 days in all the great roads from modena to venice and im surprised at how smooth and nice it is. The cali isnt as powerful but it is enough for most people, plus its tranny is better and the smooth and effortless ride reminds me of a softer version of my maserati mc-stradale. The cali is just easier to drive, the 612 is nice, but if im buying used, i might choose the cali, plus the top goes down.
The 612 tranny is twicthy today compared to the DSGs around town.

thanks. I already have a 2 seater V8 so wanting a 4 seater to carry adult passengers. Did you find the Cali rather cramped for adults?

You can not get 2 adults in the back, unless they are very small people in the front and the back!

i didnt get my 612 to put people in the back, i dont think anybody does. its a nice fantasy but although its sort of roomy and u can, i only fit people in the back seats maybe 4 times in the last 3 years??
with the cali, no.

But its nice to know you can if the need takes? for me with the FF it was to fit a child in the back. and the odd adult for shorter journeys.

I heard on the cali, you would need to open the top in order to fit adults comfortably otherwise the headroom is not enough. Is the headroom enough in the 612 and FF?

the headroom in the FF is super, gets cramped if your over 6ft !

Ferrari doesn't even call the Cali a 2+2, in a TV interview with Luca he said it maybe was a 2+1 at best, the back seats in the Cali are more a decoration than functional.

You can get small children in them with the roof up, roof down adults can fit, but they are looking like they are sat out on the back.

I believe the California can be spec as 2 or 2+2 seater. The back seat is about the same as 911 but more upright, so agreed with Habsy that small adults can sit, albeit snug.
The 612 is a more proper 2+2 IMO.

But then again, you don't get a Ferrari as people transporter!

I used my 612 to travel with two more persons, and also the one in the back was absolutely fine... (medium height person).
In the cali, I was not fine driving it, to small.
You cannot compare the two cars, if you're thinking about going around in 3 or 4, go with the 612 (or the FF): I love this opportunity.

In Istanbul, this older looking man drove a black california.

in the passenger seat was a women, and in the back were 2 younger women, so 3 women and 1 guy, made me laugh. looked so cramped.

All I have for you is two words: Panamera Turbo!

The 612 is a proper Ferrari 2+2 GT and a worth addition to a long line that stretches back to the 250 GTE. The California was a Maserati project taken over by Ferrari and designed to bring a new target group into Ferrari ownership.

tazandjan 12-30-2012 06:58 AM

Boxer- Proven by the facts that the California is the only Ferrari V8 with a 90 degree crankshaft and the only current Ferrari with a wet sump lubrication system.

champagne612 12-30-2012 08:21 AM

Back seats in 2 sports cars are for kids or people that need to justify their purchase.

The 612 and the FF work but it's no way to host an an adult to a ride in a Ferrari.

Speaking of justifying - this one is awfully tempting.

Amen

The 612 is extremely comfortable and if you strap in two duffy bags in the rear seats you can carry as much luggage as in a sedan and still you're in a Ferrari. You can't say that about the Cali because there you're not in a Ferrari, you're in a Maserati.
