The Ferrari sound

What can be done to make the 400 exhaust sound more like it's predecessors ? The engine is the same as the glorious sounding 365 GTC/4 and GTB/4 so I assume the 365 GT4 2+2,400 and 412 can sound almost the same.

My car has 4 mufflers on each side strangling the noise and this was how Ferrari wanted it. This car was meant to be a comfortable and fast cruiser but it could sound much better :-)

Anyone tried to change or custom rebuild the exhaust for a more sporty sound and at the same time keep the cabin nice and quiet ?

Arvid- Why not just buy Daytona components in SS and modify them to fit your 2+2? Should be easy except for the header connections.

Sporty and quiet may be mutually exclusive.

I have thought about it Terry, but the budget will not allow that this year.... I've desided to use the original parts for now and enjoy the nice but rather suttle sound :-)

Arvid- In many cases the 60 deg V12s from the 70s and 80s had multiple mufflers in line with the headers. Replacing one of those sets of mufflers with stainless straight pipes can really enhance the sound. My old Daytona had a system like that and it made really pretty music at all rpms.

Thanks Terry. Your advice is always appreciated :-)

I will consider this option next season. Currently new brakes, suspension rubber and engine tune-up is taking up all this seasons time

Something has been going on here since last post....

Custom made SS exhaust has been ordered and delivered from Stebro. Fewer and smaller mufflers with less padding inside. The four tips has removable inserts for going "all the way" or back on again for quieter cruising :-)

Quality looks good and the system was ordered painted black for an all original look. Curious about the fit and sound. Shouldn't be hard to sound better than the original though...

I think this was one of the last Stebro systems to be delivered. Owner of Stebro passed away during my order. Knowing the exhaust is in my garage at this time is pure luck circumstances considered ... But that's another story :-)

It's been a while since purchase and the Stebro has been sitting patiently in a corner of the garage since. Finally last week I got around to install it.

Did it fit ? Nope....
But all is not lost. Center section is a straight fit but the rear section needs to be cut, bent and welded. Like I feared...

The sound file will have to wait a few more weeks ;-)

Terry, unfortunately you are right. It will be fixed later this month so hopefully I can experience what I've bought and paid for. To bad I have to put money in it twice...

Wonder what happened to Stebro this last year ?

Stebro finally complete and fitted. Sounds good, loud but not too loud. BUT,all that's stainless is not gold...

First I drove with only the Stebro mid-section and original rear mufflers. That was a clear improvement over the stock, both in sound and driveability. The car felt stronger. Clearly the original mid-section had to much resistance.

Now with complete system in place I feel I lack some of the fantastic mid-range torque. I suspect there is not enough resistance in the system and that this has altered the characteristic of the engines performance. A few more good long drives and I'll make up my mind. Either it stays or it goes.

Any thoughts and inputs would be great.

Thanks,
Arvid
