Facts (From the USGS): Magnitude 3.6 Date-Time Friday, July 16, 2010 at 09:04:47 UTC Friday, July 16, 2010 at 05:04:47 AM at epicenter Time of Earthquake in other Time Zones Location 39.167°N, 77.252°W Depth 5 km (3.1 miles) set by location program Region POTOMAC-SHENANDOAH REGION Distances 15 km (10 miles) NW of Rockville, Maryland 30 km (15 miles) ENE of Leesburg, Virginia 35 km (20 miles) NW of WASHINGTON, D.C. 70 km (45 miles) WNW of ANNAPOLIS, Maryland I was just waking up and felt the house shake. I thought it was a passing truck in our neighborhood, but then I realized that I didn't hear the sound of a diesel or any other truck I've heard before. I then wondered if we just had an earthquake? After taking a shower and turning on the news my suspicions were confirmed! I wonder what's the farthest anyone in our region felt the quake? Bill P. Fairfax, VA ![]() |

I didn't notice it in Ashburn. First night I moved to San Diego we had a tremor of about the same magnitude..all of my family said not to move there because of the quakes. The radio said this area had a tremor similar to this 30yrs ago...anything can happen. |

Having spent many years in California, I was guessing about 3 to 5 when it was occuring. Turned on the news to see it was 3.6. The one I experienced in Pasadena, MD about 5 years ago was just a bang. This one was 10 seconds of shaking and rumbling, but nothing compared to the California quakes.

woke both of us up. I thought it was an airplane but when i didn't hear any turbines or truck engines I thought did we just have a tremor? Like you guys said about 10 seconds of shaking and rumbling.... weird!

| In California, a 3.6 isn't even worth talking about.

Which part of our beloved California did you reside Zapper? The strangest part of it to me was that all of the glass seemed to be vibrating quite alot...but I didn't actually feel anything. It took a few minutes for my brain to understand how something so extreme was so subtle at the same time. 5am and a tap dancing cat...not the best of way to start of the day. I wonder who drifts into the ocean first, California or DMV. |

| I never officially resided in California, but my dad ran a medical clinic in North Hollywood and my parents resided in Westlake Village. The most memorable earthquake I'd say was a 6.7 in '94.

I only heard the noise. No cats. No shaking. No ratttling. At first I thought it was thunder, quite long. Then, because there was no lightning or rain, perhaps a sonic boom? Or, was it Wetpet banging on my door again wanting to borrow a cup of Seagrams 7 go go with his Seven Up? After I heard the news, I went out to inspect the pool for cracks and leaks. What next? Raging forrest fires followed by mud slides?
