|  Those Amazing Men and their Machines Historic air mail flight to be celebrated in Sonoma County | PressDemocrat.com Sonoma County had the first documented Air Mail flight, 1911, in the US, according to the Smithsonian Institution. The actual aircraft saved into the Postal Museum portion of the Smithsonian. That aircraft is also the first aircraft built in California. The pilot, Fred Wiseman, who also built the aircraft, was an early Car racer. Point of thread is those times were quite the seat of your pants events. He never had lessons, and just went for it.
