| 24 Hours of LeMons LeMons brings out the lemons Quote: |
The Wiener the World Awaited was one of about 150 "race" cars competing at Infineon Raceway last weekend during the 2010 24 Hours of LeMons in which cars that can cost no more than $500 are driven, thrashed, beaten and crashed in what Sonoma driver Bradley Gray described as, "Burning Man meets Mad Max meets LeMans." Drivers don't have to have a competition license or experience. Halfway through, a "people's curse" car is chosen and the participating mob has 30 minutes to completely destroy it. Racing mistakes result in bizarre penalties; some teams, said Gray, "had to dress up like the Village People and dance to the entire length of their 'Greatest Hits' album" before returning to the course. Accidents are common but the only contact Grays' car had was with the Wienermobile, which resulted in a dented bun. Gray's team, "Mr. Hankey II," consisted of drivers Gray, Ian Stewart, Terry Watson, David Ross, Jeff Ross and crew chief Bob Mouile. Gray wasn't clear on the team's finishing position at press time. The winning team received $1,500 in nickels.
