Unfortunately I cannot post in the Onwers section under the thread ''looking for an F40'' by member Licenok, so I started this one as I remember he/you (if you are reading this) was looking for an F40 from the U.S and I just received an email from Mike Sheehan with details of an F40 for sale.

This is the email :

''The owner of 1991 USA model F40 s/n 90568 has just authorized a significant price reduction on this exceptional vehicle. The body fit and paint are excellent, highlighted by a recently completed and very extensive $10,000 detailing and freshening. If you want what is certainly both one-of-the-fastest and one-of-the-most-highly-detailed F40s in America, this is it, now priced at only $499,500.00

This F40 is everything the production F40 should have been with more linear power and big brakes that work. Over $100,000 spent on upgrades including LM turbos, new ECUs, LM throttle linkage, short shift kit, full engine bay insulation, Tubi street exhaust, Aeroquip hosing and fire system. The chassis has Koni racing shocks, a full F40 LM brake system and sway bars, new pedal box and 18" Enkei wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires. This F40 will light the tires up in 3rd gear.

THis F40 has been on the market for a few months now. Original asking price was either $525k or $550k. Will probably sell for around $450k.

Who in his right mind would want one? No wonder it's been for sale for so long.

Sure it's a neat car but just the thought of the maintenance is a nightmare!

Of course if one can do his own that's great but the thought of those turbos!!!

I figured I'd get the business from him when he saw my post!!!

I saw a gorgeous F40 here about 3 weeks ago that is locally owned.

It was in for service at the local Ferrari specialist here in San Ramoin.

It's really a neat car but the thought of the cost of that maintenance!

Boxer has the experience by now but the average owner does not.

I understand that it is very sensitive to seals and if not driven regulary they dry and leak.

Sheehan found a 288 GTO for a customer a little over a year ago. To make the car saleable to pass the PPI over $100K was spent on the car.

It had not been driven in a long time and most seals, gaskets, and hoses were toast!

Only the moderately insane who are humoring their inner 8 year old.

So far maintenance $$$ has been less than what I spent on either the 365 BB or F355 GTS over the same period. Only real major expense is tanks every ten years.

Use it and they are fine. Sit it and all the seals etc go and then it is big $$$

Correction, this car was first offered for sale in July for $595k.

That's something I thought about when I saw the 8800miles (about 14000Kms) for this F40. Would that be considered low for a car like this and does this mean there is a chance it has been sitting longer than it has been driven? Ever since I joined the site, this is something I have come to learn (not being an owner with experience) that Ferrari's dont do good if they are garage queens and that the lower mileage is not always the best thing to look for when buying a Ferrari as this is a sign of the car not being used.

This is a 17 year old car. Whatever the mileage is, there is a very good chance it was, or recently has been, sitting for a long time. What is important is to find out how it has been taken care of in the last few years. If it sat 15 years ago but was then properly recomissioned 3 years ago and has been used on a regular basis since, then no issue.

as an F40 owner, what is the implication of originality (and future desirability) by making all of these post-spec alterations. Surely it makes servicing more expensive, and lowers future value.

In this case, the alterations would make it great to drive on a track but leave it very hard for driving on the road. With the racing shocks and sway bars, you are really going to feel every little imperfection in the road surface.

In terms of the value of the car, as long as all the changes can be reverted fairly easily, it should not make that much of a difference. Servicing would definitely be more complicated if anything went wrong.

As much as I think that one would love to own a fabulous monster like this F40, I would have to go to driving school first, and besides, not terribly realistic car for driving in Tokyo streets. (However, I do spot these super exotics in Tokyo. Last year, I happened to be see a black Porsche Carrera GT coming down this street at around 40km/hr. Honestly, from a short distance away, I thought it was just another black Boxster. I remember saying to myself, what a waste in many respects). w/ smiles Jimmy

per the latest email the asking price is now down another $50k

If you can afford this car, I don't think you'd be worried about the maintenance. Every F40 owner I've met has had over 5 cars in their collection and this usually wasn't their most expensive or exotic vehicle.
