would take a bit of research: SN anyone? Can't be too many LHD's Their link http://www.fmm.co.za/main.jsp?skipIntro=true shows it there, but doesn't actually show they own one. I assume they do as of the two Ferraris referenced, there is the F40 and an Enzo.

Kind of a cool site though...complete with engine noise.

Latest on him from Dec. 2010. http://blog.agent4stars.com/category...johann-rupert/

Unless he just tossed the F40 as 'it got dusty or something' he certainly had enough cash to repair it.

Yes it was repaired.

The pics below were taken last month. The Ferrari Owners Club (SEFAC) had an event called Giro Del Capo in October for a week down in Cape Town and one of the stops during the event was having lunch and visting Mr Rupert's car museum where he has all his Ferrari's amongst other collectable cars.

Here you can see the F50 in between his Enzo and F40. He also has a 288GTO which is behind the F40

Normally the cars are displayed at an angle but the lunch was held inside this hall of the museum, so that is why the cars are parked directly behind one another to make space for the lunch tables (seen in the last pic).

Thanks. Was the work done in South Africa or Maranello?

It was repaired here in South Africa at the Ferrari agent, as the damage was not as ''bad'' as what was thought at first. The extent was carbon fibre body parts, rear left suspension, front right suspension, radiators and oil coolers. Plus three rims and all 4 tyres had to be replaced.

Johann Rupert himself gave a statement listing the damage as the media were reporting that the F50 was a write off as a result of his son's crash and it made it seem like it was one of those stories where a little rich brat took daddy's car for a drive and wrote it off. Back then he was 22 years old but what the media didn't know was that he has done advanced driving courses and completed two Mille Miglia's with his dad. Johann was not happy about the media reports and wanted to set the record straight.

It does not sound like it was that bad then. If the tub had been cracked, it would have had to go back to Maranello for replacement.

Anyone bidding on the Copart FBI F50 should try to find out what the SA F50 cost to repair.

Mike , how much is it to have an F50 or F40 in South Africa? I ask because i think taxes there are expensive but i do not know how high!

Taxes are 100% for foreign cars. A new 458 costs around $440k without options. I would assume F40's or F50's would be kept very high due to the high prices of less Ferraris. I would also imagine there are only 1 or 2 F50's in the country, and around 5 - 7 F40's.

Have a look here for pricing on secondhand Ferraris in SA: Auto Trader South Africa - Used Cars for sale

Divide by 7.6 for US$

Onno

Future: 458 Italia (May 2012)
Present: 550 Maranello, 330GTC, 365BB (x2)
Past: eh - see above.

That's a good point. If one just exported for repair not to be licensed in SA then brought back to US for re-registration...I wonder if that would past Fed muster?

212 Onno is spot on.
Cars here are double the price to 2,5 times the price.

In the field of F40 and F50 we follow a completely different methodology in valuing them.

By way of example.

A 288GTO priced at UKS 440 000 would attract import duties of UKS 360 000 and the car would be classified as a "Show Only" or Static Display" and would not be allowed on the roads.

An F40 now would fetch anywhere from Euro 500 000 to 600 000 depending on condition and no history.
An F50 would be somewhere between Euro 900 000 and 1 000 000.

A further example a 1995 F355 berlineta clean condition full history no accidents with between 40 000km to 60 000km asking prices are in the region of Euro 125 000
A major service for the car would be in the region of Euro 4 500 with the 360's coming in at 2 800

Our parts across the board are twice as expensive as Europe irrespective of the car make.
Ferrari labour charge at the main agents is roughly Euro60/70 per hour
Our road taxes are Euro30 to 50 per annum.
Fuel cost per litre is Euro1,07

So the cost of ownership here is steep although there is a large F car community.

.......are you crying yet?
