288 GTO: Search Completed: The Redux

Folks,

It's time for a new thread...I'm struggling to type this since I'm very excited...but finally the dream has come true. But first, I would like to thank Jimmy who took us to a fantastic dinner in Tokyo and whose search continued to motivate us to find the right car and so I name this thread in his honor.

So, Dean and I have acquired 56653. The funny thing about all of this, that after searching for years, 56653 turned up 3 miles from my own house in Scotts Valley at Canepa Design. Many thanks to Bruce and Robert Jordan for their help and support in making this happen. We have not yet taken possession, I expect to happen in the next 30 days as Bruce goes over it with a fine tooth comb.

As some of you may know, 56653 was #199 of the original 200 homologation cars and was sold to Keke Rosberg. He never took possession of the car, instead selling it on to Joseph Galdi of Tucson on the condition that Il Commendatore never found out. So this is really a one owner car in the most unbelievable, original condition. Current mileage is 8622 km. Over the coming months, I will detail more of the cars history and share some experiences, in the hope that I can match Jimmy's prose.

I have attached some pictures, including one with our friend and business partner Ken Okuyama when he visited us on Saturday.

Cheers,
Shiv

Shiv, I am caught in complete surprise and shock. I did not realize that you were interested in acquisition.

What a great decision and I am so happy for you two. I am humbled to know my rants and decisions helped you in some ways to yours.

The GTO is such a special car that I can keep on ranting.

Many owners simply keep them for keepsake and I can understand that. However, behind the wheel would be an experience to behold. No doubt latter models are faster, but those who espouse that simply do not get it.

I am so happy for you that you made the decision. Seems like a fantastic GTO too. You would love the looks, the stance, the sound, the sense of lunging forward speed, the turbos coming on early at around 2800rpm spooling sound, I can keep on going.

For me, the GTO is nothing short of divine.

Let me stop here and congratulate you again.

Jimmy

PS. Glad you two enjoyed the tempura dinner we had. Looks like Ken is fully involved in your business now. Great !

Jimmy,

I have wanted one since I saw my first in 1986. They were a lot cheaper then ! Suffice to say that this one was an arm and a leg and then another arm and another leg for good measure which is why it took the 2 of us !

Cheers,
Shiv

Shiv, I emulate your passion, which is probably much more than mine.

I am sure the market range required all limbs, but it still is the right decision from all aspects. Nothing but respect and congrats to you two. I am so happy for you.

Shiv- Way to go. At least on this one, we know exactly how many Ferrari built.

Thanks Taz. If Joe's book is correct, I guess the answer is 284, with 58345 being the last one. I've seen the letter that the factory wrote to the late Ron Tonkin confirming the fact, it was displayed with the car at the Reunion at Concorso Italiano.

What a great story Shiv! And clearly you appreciate what you have acquired, which is not always the case. The 288GTO is one of my all-time favourites, almost bought one in 2011 but found out it had been crashed heavily back in '80ies. Should have done it anyway, would have made me a richer man in more ways than I can count. The ship has sailed now, but I can still admire from afar.

Hearty congrats!

Shiv- I show 272 from Maranello Concessionaires, who got it directly from Maranello.
