Default F-40 Fiasco

Have any of you seen the TV program on the Discovery channel "Fast N' Loud" in which a gibbering idiot buys a totally wrecked F-40 for a half million dollars? He plans to rebuild it using only genuine factory parts in hope of getting it certified as it as an authentic factory car. worth over a million dollars. (Maybe it was 20 years ago, but this is NOW--- 2013!)

This sounds like total insanity. The buyer is depicted as a redneck, which is an insult to genuine
rednecks.

Please let me know your opinion

Default I saw that

I don't think that car would be worth a dime over $250K with that much damage history. I'm not sure I'd pay that much for it.

If there is a total rebuild, done by the factory (I know of at least 1), then it is possible to get a decent but not great price for it. Current F40 money for the best, in Europe, is over $750k. It is not likely he will make money. But if he saves an F40, so much the better.

There have been several totally F40s completely rebuilt at the factory. One was auctioned by Bonhams about a year and a half ago. The owner actually died in the crash in that particular instance. Not a car I would want to own at any price.

Richard and Dennis bought it on the mid-season finale at the very end. The same episode when they restore a 38 Ford.

F40 Alert-- It looks like "Fast & Loud" will have new show tonite at 10 PM PDST. I hope it will show the completion of the F40 rebuild and it's subsequent sale for profit or loss. My bet would be on loss.

If he used factory duct tape then maybe. Then again this car is probably worth more:

I just don't see how they can re-build that F40, to Ferrari specs and "Stamp of Approval" for anything less than double what they paid....and then they have to find a "Low-Forehead" to sell it to that has the 900k-plus they will need to sell it for - to get close to turning a profit.

I guess we shall see....im sure a lot of F-Life folks will be watching for the outcome!

2 I found that seem questionable....one in US, one in Italy with notes simply saying fully restored:

I hope that this isn't a false alarm, but my TV listing says that the F40 program on F&L will be tonight at 6 PM PDST on the Discovery Channel.

The guy totally rebuilt the F40 using factory parts with no discount. He repainted the car black and had special black wheels made to order. I believe that he upgraded the engine - bigger turbos. It did look wicked - saw the proramme twice whilst in USA.

Just watched the Fast n Loud episode where they completed the rebuild of the F40. Customising as they went along. Black Recaro seats, pop up headlights replaced with cooling louvres, fog lamps replaced with led lights, new wheels, black paint with F40 motif on rear wing highlighted in red, engine mods to give a claimed 550 hp etc. It seems that the original chassis was so bent that when they tried to reinstall the motor and gearbox after chassis work, the motor would not line up with the motor mounts. So they simply removed the motor mounts and welded them in where the motor would line up. They also delighted in giving the front bulkhead a few big smacks with a hammer to get the connection for the brake lights to work.

They say that they paid $400k for the wrecked F40 and spent another $295k on parts and labour. They sold it for $800k. Well a friend of theirs paid the $400k for the wrecked F40 and this same friend paid them $400k for their work to secure the black modded F40.

Laugh out loud moment when they drove it around a track and then asked why Ferrari did not get it right the first time. As they so obviously had.

And so goes the Ferrari legend/wives tale machine.

To a significant number of the brain dead TV viewing public a couple of yahoos on TV really improved on Ferrari's best.

All that work for an extra 50 HP?

I bet a good running stock one will go by it like it is painted on a wall.

Way too funny...I guess they should have added the option "Type-R" Honda stickers as every tuner knows that's good for at least 50-75 hp. And racing seats; absolutely, they always makes the car go faster. Sadly, the F-40 came in as a turd and left only marginally better. Did you catch the part about just how precise they were getting the frame +/- 1 mm, yet the motor mount was off by 6 mm? Last time I checked, the motor mount was attached to the frame. WTF. Funny just how many posts there are about making these cars better, yet so few on just how great they can be when fixed 'right."
