Default F40 Rear end stepping out

Took the F40 out for a short run yesterday. Pavement was still wet from rain earlier in the day so I did take it pretty easy and carefully. Very glad I did. The second time I spooled up the turbos a bit (on a very straight clear road) the rear started sliding to the right. A quick correction caught it and ended the drama quickly. However it was a good reminder on just how much respect you always need to give a F40.

Asphalt is getting colder now, too, which makes a huge difference. I believe right now is the most dangerous time for supercar owners. We want to take in the last opportunity to drive our cars, but we easily forget it is not summer anymore. I've mentioned this before but it's a great example: an acquaintance drove his F50 last year. It was sunny but the road was damp. It was about 5 degrees C. He lost all grip driving onto an onramp at 40km/h. Car hit a tree and was a complete write-off.

Wide, sticky tyres and cold, damp asphalt do not go together. Be careful out there!! Remember also that the weather might be warmer than the road - if it's been freezing at night the asphalt will take quite some time to warm up, and maybe very cold even though the air temperature is much warmer.

I am driving to Italy in 2 weeks and I wanted to take the 550. But now I'm thinking I should really put some winter tyres on the 335i and take that. It just makes so much more sense (even apart from the legal implications of not having winter tyres in various European countries).

Thinking of what may have happened, that would scare the lights out of me. Very fortunate, indeed and glad to know it was just a reminder for you, Boxer. w/ smiles Jimmy

I agree totally. We just came back from a nice little trip in the F40. Temperature was 10 degrees all day long and the surface was dry. Because of the mounting dangers you mentioned I let my wife drive it..all the way. She has not used the turbo rpm's but rather drove within the 1500 and 3000 rpm's range, calm but excercising fast gear changing. That way she will gain experience with the clutch and gear change in general. She did an excellent job today and I'm very proud of her. Thanks for the reminder.

Keeping it under 3000 rpm will certainly limit the potential for much drama. Good call.

I read between the lines Jimmy.......!
But seriously now...it was a little boring too of course, but worth the effort to try to get away with her fear from the car (and the turbos).

The fact that she is willing to even try is hugely impressive.

My statement was purely out of respect and awe, 212Export !!! Just as Boxer stated, I agree totally, ...but yet, for one minor point, that is as long as she did not drive with her 15cm heel Jimmy Choo or Louboutin shoes ! w/ smiles Jimmy

Watching a former Miss Thailand drive an Enzo (and she drove it well) in high heels was one of the more impressive feats of driving skill I have seen.
