Jack- That Mk 1 did not have all the go fast tricks they now have. It was a stock car with the 360 hp 289 and four two barrel Webers, same as fitted optionally to the 289 Cobras. I am not sure what kind of tires it had, but it seems like they were Goodyears, who were supplying Shelby-American with tires at the time. I just remember that, compared to the Corvettes I owned, she really stuck in corners and had really outstanding handling coupled with a good, but very loud, ride. And she was low, really low. GT-40 stood for the car being 40 inches high, and even the Dino I picked up three or four years later was much higher and it was around 44" high. A dealer friend in Wichita Falls, Texas, picked her up for around $10K in preference to a Dino 246 GT for about the same price. I love Dinos, but a GT-40 was something else. Top speed 162 mph, which was something in 1971/72. My choice of engines was poor, a 302 with EFI would have been perfect. All I want in a car now is to set you back in the seat and be reliability, my aggressive driving on the track has come to an end. I prefer to watch then drive home in the car I arrived in. This is what I am trying to make of the 208 turbo. Here is a video of the 40 I made when I tested a couple camera's for open road racing, I feathered the throttle till all the on coming traffic got by then stepped into it. This road is in front of my house and all my neighbors love it when I test my cars. GT40 MK1 road test.wmv - YouTube |

Do you have a rear anti roll bar (sway bar) installed? If so is it set on hard or soft? what about rear castor and camber settings? I spoke to an owner here at a regional race track (Zwartkops Race Track) who runs a superformance gt40 and he has the anti roll bar setting on soft spurely due to the track being twisty with very short straights. Next time I am at the track I shall as a matter of interest have a more detailed discussion as to his settings. |

There is an up grade to the sway bar from the current .75 inch to 1.25 inch which helps in hard cornering, I personally do not have a problem in the corners just the fact that its to much HP for such a light car. The castor and camber is set to SPF spec's and feels to be stable up to 165 mph, thats the fastest I have had it. At first when I put the car on the road it had a very light front at anything over 135, changing the car to SPF recommended settings (.5 inch noise down) solved that problem. | |

Jack- She sounds great. The RHD and RH shifter on the original did make it a pain to get into and out of the car. The layout on your car looks like it would be less of a pain, at least as long as you are relatively young.

Heyyyyy, Jack. Congrats! ![]() I've been so busy I haven't even looked outside of the tech section in probably two weeks. I finally get a chance to make it through the other sub-forums and find your thread here. Great to see it! |

Thanks for the transfer. Ok here are a few more pictures, the intercooler (on the right) was a double core air to air but I cut off the tanks put a divider between the cores and made it effectively double the size for cooling. The small pump is a Mercedes Benz pump they used on late model cars to circulate water in the heating system, these pumps are magnetic coupling and seem to work well, I have used them in other cars and not had a problem yet. The tank to the left is for the water to air intercooler and the one on the right is for the engine coolant. If you look on the side of the engine coolant tank you will see a large line (black) which goes to the suction side of the electric pump in the front of the car, the small line (blue) goes to the highest part of the engine, the purpose is to bring all the air at the highest point of the engine to the tank thus removing any air in the motor. The intercooler tank being low to no pressure is simple and nothing more than a place to add fluid and recover from the twin water to air intercoolers I plan on putting inside the plenum going to the throttle bodies. The AEM ECM supports coil on plug but I also added an AEM twin fire (same as MSD DIS4) unit as under boost spark diminishes and this will help out a lot. The relays are for the fans which is controlled by the ECM and the water pump for the engine and water to air intercooler. The wrap ties on the lines is a not a clamp but just a little reassurance for the barbed fittings, its just peace of mind. It looks like a mess but will all come together. I'm at our home in NorCal, had one nice day in the 70s now it's in the 50s, so the sealing of the driveway has come to a halt. I use to have a 400a I kept here for drives in the wine country but I sold it to buy the motor for the gt40, sure miss the old girl, life continues to revolve.
