Wow, it's amazing how much insulation is stuffed in the airbox.

When you plug weld something like that, how do you do it? TIG, MIG? Does the coin melt into the metal, or is it just a backer that you can chip off afterwards?

The coin was glowing as I circled my way around to the center with the MIG welder so yeah its part of the air cleaner now. I almost blew through it on the lowest setting, had to be careful.

Paul,

Unreal, had no idea gertrude was getting an engine rebuild as well. Amazing work. Love the side by side photo of the engines. Shows what we can expect when gertrude's engine is complete.

Ya, I wasn't expecting that either

Though, in the end, it should be a work of art 308 with a bit more power

Some goodies arrived.

Control arms and various other components have been sand blasted. Ill install the suspension bushings then paint the arms.

Air cleaner will get sprayed in black wrinkle as will the valve covers. Timing covers will be silver.

Waiting on pistons and cams then the machining will begin.

So, am I understanding that this will be a carb'd 3.4L? What ignition system will be used? Also, planning on dyno time? Looks like fun there!

Yes thats correct, carbed 3.4 with electromotive ignition. The car will look stock with the exception of the ignition but will move along very well. We'll dyno it but probably after a breif break in period.

Control arms shot blasted, the remainder was glass bead blasted. I pressed in the new control arm bushings, masked everything off now they're ready for paint. Ill be painting the other stripped components then machine the rotors so only the pad contact area is bare metal. There are a few suspension components that are bare from new, those parts will get a light fog of clear coat to preserve the natural look. The one part of the spindle I dont feel is worth the risk to duplicate is the spindle arm. Its supposed to be yellow zinc with a painted black spindle. The arm goes into the spindle on a very large taper with a keyway and a ring nut. I removed the nuts and washers for plating and attempted removing the arms but they're just so tight im concerned ill be buying Brett a pair of them if I insist on removing them. Sorry Brett its getting painted!
The body metal work is finished and will be in primer by the end of the week so ill take some shots tomorrow and post then.
I sprayed the valve covers with black wrinkle, ill post pics of them tomorrow as welll and spray the air cleaner too.

Metal work almost complete. Antenna hole, US spec marker holes and rear lower quarter panel box slots removed. We'll add the new Euro side repeater holes in the front fenders tomorrow. The next step will be primer then a light skim coat of filler to specific areas if required at all. This way it will be sandwiched between layers of primer so it never touches the metal. Then block sanding and more primer etc until its straight as an arrow.
Valve cover right out of the oven, ill detail the raised areas after it cools.

Wow.

What color are you going to paint the suspension, spindles, etc.? Gloss black? Semi-gloss?

I repainted most of the rear part of the frame of my car gloss black just as a rust preventer, but I'm not really happy with how it came out because the gloss finish just doesn't fit the car. It's a pain when jacking the car up as well since the jack tends to scratch it unless one is super careful. I keep thinking something like POR-15 might be a good choice for frame, suspension, etc. as I'm not overally concerned with originality.

Were using urethane paint with varying degrees of gloss depending on the part. The spindles are glossy rather than flat, the splash shields are satin. The frame is a sort of satin finish (with lots of dirt), it seems ferrari didn't care much about cleanliness as far as the frame goes. I agree gloss is wrong on the frame, changes the look too much.

Sorry for the posting dry spell just been very busy and just not enough hours in the day. A lot has happened since the last photos.
Rebuilding / restoring sub-assemblies while the body was being handled. Gas pedal has needle bearings in two places, the grease is as old as the car and its a forgotten part I think. So I took it apart, cleaned and lubed it, one of the bearings was caked with dry grease now it moves effortlessly. Found a similar problem with the pivot bearings on the water cross-over manifold causing high pedal effort. Shifter was full of hair and dirt, broke it down cleaned and lubed then hit the inside of the shifter box with satin black paint like original so it looks perfect through the chrome gate. Working on restoring a few steering wheels as well. Had to send the spokes out for anodizing before I can go any further.

Had all of the hardware plated along with larger items like latches, the brake booster shell and sent the coolant pipes out for anodizing. The pipes are the before pics.

Rebuilt carbs after hardware was plated. Rebuilt water pump, looked much better on the outside than inside but after replacing the seals and bearings its like new again. Cleaned more parts such as the transfer gears, bearings and cover and various other parts.

Planned to rebuild the master cylinder but its junk. The bore has a several rust pits so its not safe to use and not worth sleeving.

Pipes back from anodizier. Some of the pipes are from the 76 boxer and are pitted so ill have to find replacements.

Starting to assemble the suspension for immediate installation when the body returns.

Finished the suspension. Paint is 322 rosso corsa ala 458 Italia. The boxer I'm restoring is beside it, ill update that thread shortly. The black has since been applied to the 308 and the plan is to pick it up end of the week then I can start putting the car back together! Engine parts are at the machine shop and moving along. The paint is perfect and Im not bragging because I didn't paint it! The shop did an amazing job, I couldn't ask for better.

Paul- Everything looks beautiful, except that master cylinder. That color looks really good on a 308. Much brighter and prettier than the red that originally came on 308s. Original paint on this one, except for the doors, which rusted through. But those were done by a Ferrari shop, so pretty close.
