You mean there's something OUTSIDE the garage besides the driveway?

Are you sure?

Just a note, I made my own caps out of the old distributor mounts...just cut them flush and plugged the cam hole with a round stock...I did cut the ends of the camshafts though to make them fit.
I can't figure out how to post pictures just yet but as soon as I do I'll put them on here.

I've been following this thread intently since I'm doing my second rebuild and this time I'm installing the TEC3 to replace the ignition and pretty much the same as BRETM...anyway...my only difference is I'm considering using an individual coil pack setup instead of the provided 4 coil packs that came with Nick's kit. Nick said Audi made some coil packs that meet the requirements and I was wondering if anyone's looked into this?

Sounds like a another great thread to add to the projects section here on FLife!

Like Taz said, welcome to the site. Admittedly I've been slowed a bit with my rebuild lately since my wife and I moved into a new (to us) house. We're dealing with a plugged sewer drain yesterday evening and all day today... The joys of home ownership.

I would recommend you steer clear of German (Bosch, Beru, or Bremi) COP's and stick to either Japanese (Denso) or domestic US COP's (Chrysler 300, etc.). The Germans just don't have their COP technology sorted yet. I've converted a 550's dual six tower coilpack ignition (Motronic 5.2) to COP, and for more information, I have a thread in the V12 section about the conversion here: COP Conversion for the 550

High mileage, low compression, and missing on a few cylinders.....just like my cars.

I've got to dig an 8' deep trench about 150' long is what I have to do!

The drains cleared, but the pipes broken in a few spots so it'll plug again in due time. Looks like my self-made honey do list just got a little longer. Right now I'm just trying to figure out if I should make the ice rink when I have a machine back there, or put that off until another time.

Bret- That is definitely something you want to hire someone to do.

I've got to get Mark over. He's the master of trenches after that geothermal build.

I've spent a fair amount of time in an excavator, so we'll see. I have to check with the town and check what their rules are - you don't want to be the new guy in the neighborhood and start ruffling feathers, I suppose. I've got a good buddy who's a plumber, so he can take care of the actual line. If I can save $10k digging the trench myself though, that might be the way to go. Being close to NYC we're in a twilight zone for blue-collar labor... jobs that nearly anywhere else in the country would cost $1-2k seem to cost $10-12k here.

More importantly, I need to get an hour of 308 time in this weekend so I can throw Jack's crank sensor tester on the ECU and see if it picks it up.

I'd say call DigSafe just in case.

The only thing with that is you won't be able to dig for about 3-4 days after the call. Unless the gas, electric and cable guy come fast and put those flags down.

Yes, dig the trench for the ice rink while you have the machine.

Ok news on the whole deal, first I was mistaken on the type of ignition, don't know why I said TEC 3, I meant XDI first gen I got from nick. So I called both Nick and electromotive...Nick said leave well enough alone, XDI said its possible but I'll either cut the spark output in half or I could get another XDI and run them parallel off one mag pickup. Still on the fence however the cutting spark in half is not an option because I'm running 11:1 compression and apparently thats bad

Jack was kind enough to lend me his crank trigger tester a month ago. It's one of the crank triggers that he uses, which are better than the Electromotive ones, mounted in a housing that has a toothed wheel inside it (which spins when you turn the axle outside the housing). Of course, it's a first rate tool since Jack built it.

With all the work moving into the new place, I haven't had a chance to use it yet. Needless to say it's long overdue on my part having borrowed it from him, so I made a vow on Friday that I'd get some 308 time in this weekend no matter what.

This evening I got out in the garage for a bit. I spun it a few times by hand and got a signal when the wheel would stop. So, I put a bit driver in a handheld drill and used that to spin the sensor wheel. I couldn't hear the injectors over the drill, so I had to put the fuel pump fuse back in. Sure enough, I got a signal intermittently. I was just holding the pins in the harness connector, and they're not the right pins for the metri-pack. So, I think we're headed in the right direction even though the signal was intermittent.

The car actually bumped forward about 1/4 of a foot. It was in first gear, so I think one of the cylinders tried to fire at some level or another.

You are correct, how hard will it be to change out the crank trigger to the one in the distributor housing I sent you?

It shouldn't be too bad. The only trouble is that all of my tools are scattered around in boxes, and the mill/lathe combo is disassembled laying on the garage floor... that will certainly slow things down a bit.

I think I have an extra metri-pack connector kicking around... somewhere in one of my electrical wiring boxes... so in the meantime I could put that on the sensor and actually plug it into the harness and do the test again.

I think best case I have three more weekends of doing other stuff around the house before I can start working on cleaning up the garage. Getting there, slowly but surely.

Snip snip and just use butt connectors for testing, then when proven do the real nice and neat job. I think you will find that sensor will work great. Remember if you find it not running smooth switch the two wires. It does have polarity.

I couldn't resist getting out in the garage after some (relative) success yesterday. I threw a few male metri-pack pins on the sensor wires and stuck them into the harness connector. Sure enough, we're in business. I pulled the fuel pump relay after a small backfire that occurred when spinning by hand. Then I used the drill and got a nice steady signal where I could here each of the injectors firing, the coils going, etc.

I gotta get this darn house straightened out so I can get the sensor on the car and spin the motor.

You're so close, I know it's hard to hear it trying like that and not want to hear it fully running.
