The leather is just glued to a permanantly attached piece of plastic. The plastic gets distorted by the shrinking leather and you will need a hair dryer or similar to get the plastic back to shape. Then it is just a simple matter to glue on a new piece of leather.

Two caveats:
1. The "Airbag" logo in the lower corner is required by federal law. If that is no longer there and you sell the car and the air bag deploys you will be legally liable under federal law for whatever happens because it wasn't properly marked. Many repair shops do not even touch airbags because of all the legal liabilities involved. They are often subbed out.

2. Most legit upholsterers will not touch one because of the liabilities involved. Repair of an airbag is not considered a proper repair by the auto industry so they would be all on their own if something happened.

Brian,

Thank you. As usual your posts are insightful and based on experience and in depth knowledge, rather than BS.
