I notice there is a "whine" noise coming from rear of my engine/clutch area when car is at idle. The whine goes away when I depress the clutch padel. I did some research in Fchat, I am afraid my lay shaft end bearing is going bad?? Here is what I have done to try to locate the problem: I check gear oil level, it was between min and max. I then change the gear oil to Red Line 75W90NS. There is only very small amount of tiny hairline metal pieces on the magnatic plug. The inspection plate was clean with no metal bits or pieces. I had my clutch replaced two months ago. I think the mechanic did not do a good job as he did not replace the triple seals and t/o bearing. He told me they are still good. Any thoughts about my "whine" noise? what should I do next? Thanks a lot. |

It could just be your throwout bearing. That sucks that they did a clutch without doing that. Pretty much have to do the whole thing over just for the bearing.

You need a release bearing. You should always do the three teflon seals and the black o-ring when you are doing a clutch. For what they cost , it's a no brainer.Sorry that you have to re re the clutch housing again. Do not wait to long. You can damage more parts if the bearing seizes. Good luck. Alex. That was a poor judgement call one their part. It is not unusual for a throw out bearing to still be good when you replace a clutch but they never go for 2 clutches. The triple seals are why there are so many problems with the flywheels. The fact they did not get replaced really shows their lack of product knowledge. Were they the low bidder? As far as one of the shaft bearings going bad you really ought to put it in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing and get it diagnosed before taking things apart again. There are good people in the South Bay and Peninsula but a lot of bad ones too. If you need some advice in that area let me know. |

Their price wasn't low considering they didn't do the bearing and seals. They just don't know what they are doing. Many things I end up fixing it myself. I will never go back again. Yes Brian, please refer me some good shops in the area. As for the sound, I checked the sound again with a help of a friend depressing the clutch. The sound is not coming from clutch assembly. It is a swirl sound coming from the gearbox bearing cover below the left drive axle . See attached photo. The swirl sound can be heard when the car is in idle. The sound goes away when clutch padel is depress. You have to pay a lot of attention to be able to listen to the sound. My friend said she couldn't hear it. Any thoughts? Thanks for all your replies and help. |

That is where the oil pump is, but it is also where the bearings and ring nuts are. It should go to someone that knows them to listen. My email is bcco@sbcglobal.net. |

Brian, I just emailed you. I am thinking to take that cover apart to inspect my bearing and ring nut. Can I just open it? or do I need to drain the gear oil. I just replaced my gear oil two days ago with Red Line 75W90NS. |
