Default 85' 308 Engine Rebuild Cost?

What is the range of costs of a 85' 308 engine rebuild?
How many miles does this engine live for and how does the performance degrade? Under well taken care of standards.
What else should be done while your are in there?

Thanks,

ncng

I'd expect to pay approx. $15k for a full proper rebuild. In my experience either the valves get burned or the piston rings begin to fail. The indications are usually a rough idle and/or oil consumption. I've seen 308 engine that are puching the 100k mile mark with no know rebuild, they're relatively strong and underpowered which helps.
As for "what else" should be done, the exhaust headers tend to rust and crack so they should be inspected thouroughly and the fuel distributor should be checked as much as possible.
