Default 1964 250 GT Lusso Berlinetta On Offer

On offer from Mike Sheehan...

We are pleased to offer 1964 Ferrari 250 Lusso s/n 5861 GT. This Lusso has just completed a $200,000 plus bare tub-up Platinum level restoration by Chuck Wray of Grand Touring Cars. Ready to go to Cavallino and bring back a trophy. Priced right and seriously for sale at $649,950.

This 250 Lusso s/n 5861 GT has new and near flawless silver paint with superb and supple all-new black leather, new dash covering, new carpeting and an all-new headliner over a better-than-new body. The complete under-body and frame, engine, transmission and rear axle, front and rear suspension, brakes and wiring are all completely rebuilt, restored, replated or refinished and detailed to perfection. All new brake and fuel hard lines and soft lines. Every bearing or bushing in the car has been replaced or rebuilt. Easily the best Lusso we have seen in many years and far better than when new! Never damaged. In storage in southern California for almost 20 years. Well documented history going back over 35 years. We welcome any mechanical or body inspection, as we do not believe there is a Lusso that can compare in today's market. Complete with the owner's handbook, leather pouch, tools and tool roll. Comes with hundreds of in-process restoration photos. Currently fitted with a 4-speed with overdrive for freeway cruising, but comes with the correct original gearbox. All matching numbers, of course. Ready to go to Cavallino and bring back a trophy.

Very interesting that the owner choose to use another gearbox with an overdrive additional gear (guess from a 250 GTE). It pinpoints to the possibly only negative point of the Lusso, as with the 250 SWB, that the 4 speed gearbox is just not helpful if one choose to drive long distance comfortably at around 80 to 100mph. The noise and rpm levels must be quite high. (That would not bother in a SWB, as this is much more rated as a sportiv/competition car with a relevant sound level)

212Export, very knowledgable and interesting point regarding Lusso's negativity here. With only four gears, I agree with you regarding the highway GT drivability. Most likely, the owner found this out and added the overdrive. On a personal note, no doubt Lusso is very pretty and elegant, having only four gears is a major drawback, unless the main usage is driving around town at moderate speeds.
As a side note, I have a similar situation with my Abarth 750GT Zagato. The previous owner changed the four speed gears to short ratio setup, mainly for uphill race-like situations. However, this is not ideal for high speed cruising down highways. Still, it is heck of a fun to drive this Abarth.
You are so knowledagle and observant and I am always amazed. w/ smiles Jimmy

Dear Jimmy, please stop exaggarating. Why should I be knowledgable ? The major input is created by all those who share their knowings, like in this forum. Reading some specific books and magazines, I'm from time to time able to remember some specific things. So the thanks goes to the community, to you all. Interestingly, while searching history issues for certain Ferrari types, for me Cavallino magazine is a tremendeous archive to assist and I heartfully can recommend this to the real enthusiast (sometimes the whole series of Cavallino magazine can be bought, its worth every penny). On the other side if I'm looking for "hands-on" type specific "driving experiences" there is nothing like our great forum. I that respect once again thanks to the great initiator Andrew

Jimmy, looking at your fantastic Zagato 750, I'm wondering if you have ever rallied that car under competition situations. We still have about 5-8 yearly hillclimb championship races in Switzerland. They also have a class for historic cars and you would be a extremely welcome entry here with your great Abarth. Do you have hillclimb races in Japan ? (Fujiama?)

212, firstly excuse my thorough ingnorance here - but how did you tell from the pictures that the owner had used a different gearbox with overdrive?

Alfa of Tacoma has a Blue Lusso for sale but it is Blue and only has a 4 speed tranny, but I believe the price is significantly less.

Love the Sheehan car, but have also been drooling over this one at FJ; priced down, reflecting the fact that it is driven and the addition of some serious seatbelts. But only 2100 miles on a total Patrick Ottis engine rebuild . . . .

killer color combo. I either saw this car or its twin at the Cavallino Jet Reception last year; unbelievably sexy in person.

The retrofit of the 4-speed w/overdrive is interesting. Wonder if it is the Laycock unit out of a GTE? I understand it must be used gently and maintained properly. You can track the various woes of that unit over on TomYang.net. Still an improvement over the stock 4 on the Lusso.

Bryan - I saw that Lusso before on the FJ website. Stunning looking car, indeed!

There was also a great looking Lusso at EM (http://www.emcars.com/), that car was still on the website last week for $685k. In 2008 they wanted $1 million.
