Default F430 F1 transmission

I have a 2005 F430! The other day it started to blink in 3rd gear. Then going into 5th it would either hesitate or jump to 6th or N! So I dropped it off and had the pump motor and relay replaced. It worked great for 20 min! It is now doing it again plus when in 1st it will go into N! Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Thanks!

Casey- Welcome to FerrariLife. Jumping into Neutral is often the sign of the clutch on the way out, but whoever changed out the pump and relay should have been able to see that on the SD3. Resetting PIS may also have a benefit.

Did they bleed the F1 system when they changed the pump motor? Not a requirement, but air in the actuator lines could cause similar problems.

My 612 was doing something similar.

Would drop into neutral when shifting from 3 to 4.

After a few months of that happening randomly it began doing the same thing in other gears.

Took the car into the dealer - there were a bunch of defaults and they cleared them etc

580.00 later car is good to go.

Terry knows a way to clear them and reset everything - but I never posted the issue until I got it back and 1st gear seemed to pull the car a bit when engaging.

Mine performed the exact same blinking act.

Doug- Affirmative, an ECU reset, which cures many transient ailments.

1) Turn off all accessories including radio and air conditioning.
2) Turn off battery with disconnect switch and leave car overnight or at least 30 minutes until the engine is completely cold.
3) Reconnect battery.
4) Insert key and wait 30 seconds.
5) Turn key to on and leave for 30 seconds.
6) Start car and let idle for 10 minutes with no inputs whatsoever.
7) Air conditioning and radio may be turned back on. For Becker radio, insert code.
8) Drive car gently for about 20 minutes as the ECUs complete their relearning cycle.

if you took it to fow you may have bought a new pump for nothing.... your results point in that direction. You may want to consider FOW's former shop foreman. He and another great fow mechanic opened up their own shop a couple of years ago and are sponsors here. I would give them a ring to at least get a second opinion. Competizione and sports cars. In fairness, there are other independent shops in the area and most would be better than FOW.

Terry,

Should I take the + or - off for the night? Should the key be in the first position or second?

Casey- Neither, there is a battery disconnect switch that disconnects the ground strap, but leaves the alarm siren still connected so your alarm does not go off. Here is where to find it.

Casey- It actually did not sound like something an ECU reset would fix, but now you know how to do it if you ever get any other glitches.

The F430 clutch is actually pretty tough, so here is hoping a point of initial slippage (PIS) reset will fix it.

ECU reset does zero zip nada for the F1 ECU. It has no adaptive strategy to relearn. Not only a waste of time but can interfere with memory that will lead to a proper diagnosis.

One thing your symptoms do not lead me to is a pump problem.

Whoever fixes it needs to do some old fashioned diagnosis and not just throw parts at it in the hope something fixes it.

I strongly support the idea of going to Competizione. Real mechanics, not kids playing at it.

All is good now! Shifts great going down the road! Jerrett found that two bleedline screws where lose not allowing presure to build up to shift! The only problem this weekend at the dragon was it seamed it could not build up presure fast enough with all the tight corners! Anyone know how to tune the F1 transmission? Needs to be smoother and faster?

Casey- The F1 pump does not run all the time and should have no trouble keeping up the hydraulic pressure. What symptoms were you seeing?

There were three F1 ECU/TCUs for the F430, the one you have, one for MY 06/07, and one for MY 08. The latter two would be improvements on what you have. Look in Ricambi's online parts catalog for details. Looks like the 06/07 ECU/TCU is only about $1000.

http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_...=diag&I=112091

For much faster and smoother shifting, you could always get a Scud. They actually made internal changes to the transmission in addition to a new F1 ECU/TCU to speed up shifting.
