1995 456GT I note the coolant color is blue. Any suggestions as to a reasonably priced blue antifreeze that would be compatible with it? I assume it is a Ferrari product, from a Ferrari dealer, and I am hoping to save some money when it comes time to replace it. |

I use standard off the shelf for my 95 456 GT. The key here is the Al radiator to protect. Regular changing would be more important IMO.

Strange design ... when I loosened what I thought was the radiator drain plug, a lot of blue "windshield washer fluid" came out. Gee, Italian engineering. Could have sworn I knew what the f*ck I was doing, but hey, since you both say it's true, it must be so. So, where is the radiator drain plug? And if I can ever figure out how to find the correct drain plug and then drain the radiator: can anybody answer my original question as to substitute coolant? |

I called the Ferrari dealer who replaced the radiator before I bought the car, and they confirmed they sell a blue coolant. $30 per gallon. |

| The owner's manual should tell you what specification the coolant needs to meet rather than just looking at the color. Once you have the spec, your search will be much easier. Apparently a blue coolant is used by some European manufactures and korean cars, so KIA and Hyundai so I'd think thatr means some one has it cheap, but it could also mean they have 10 year warranties and figure expensive coolant is cheap insurance for them.

So this intrigued me a bit... Looks like the Engine Ice coolant is roughly 20 dollars for a half gallon. You'll need 4 of those for the average car. Seems like alot of motorcycle guys are using and they recently did a piece on Two Guys Garage about it. It seems to behave much the same way as Evans waterless coolant. You must flush your system completely before using as it doesn't play well with traditional coolant. Not to hijack but has anyone used Evans on here? If so did you notice a significant difference in temps? Current: 85' GTS QV "I don't sell cars, I sell engines. The cars I throw in for free since something has to hold the engine."

I know one guy (a pretty good engine builder) who swears buy it...but the specs and graphs all say it's not as good as standard coolants by any measure. The articles I've read (all clearly sponsored by the Evans people) all perform other cooling system mods at the time the Evans is added so it's not possible to know what actually fixed what problem....and that makes me further doubt the stuff actually works all that well. Aside from all that my biggest concern is always the boiling point....375F. The evans people say that's a good thing because you're engine won't boil over any more......but boiling is a cooling process that sets the absolute max temp the engine will ever see to about 240F. Boil is kind of like a fuse and putting in evans coolant is kind of like replacing the fuse with a bolt. The stuff has been around for some time now but it hasn't really caught on. That might be because it's not legal at race tracks (its slippery when spilled) or it could be it doesn't actually deliver what it claims. I don't know..... | |

I bought a gallon of BMW branded coolant from the Ferrari dealer. Same stuff they put in it before. BMW? |

| I know a few people that swear by the BMW or Audi coolant as well. They say its a higher quality coolant but I've never seen the specs on it.

Some of it is due to quality, some of it is due to accessibility and cost. Most coolants these days are Glycol based and work pretty well. I personally like to use Honda factory coolant, due to the fact that Honda engines are aluminum blocks and heads spinning at high RPM's...the needs between our engines and a Honda engine are similar. Not to mention in my experience Honda does a great deal of R&D for all of their products, which is why they're such reliable cars. It just makes sense, IMO. I've also been using Motul Inugel coolant, it's organic based which is something I like. |
