Default HI

Hello, I am 19 and am saving up for a very nice car when I get older. I do not buy much. Only food and of course I will have to start paying bills. I am in limbo on what kind of career I should settle for right now.I am thinking about something dealing with math/business,but I do not know what exactly. What do you all do for a living?

I've heard this question raised many times by young people, and usually in the same manner: "I want this super nice car, so what do I have to do to get it?"

With due respect, and please don't think I'm picking on you in particular, but your attitude is all wrong about this. Don't let the car itself be the focus of what you do with your life. Sure, it's one of the rewards that will come along the way, but your real focus needs to be on finding a career field that you're good at, and most importantly enjoy doing.

You really need to concentrate on finding something you enjoy, because you'll be doing it for the next 30 years, and that's an awfully long time to spend doing something that you don't like!

If you build your foundations right, ie good grades, university diploma, decent starting job, etc. then find yourself a mentor to show you the ropes and shelter you along the way, your career will progress, and the rewards will come. After that, it's setting priorities, and the self discipline it takes to follow them, ie do you want to p*ss your money away partying every night, or live a more modest life, and put your earnings towards the purchase of that exotic car that you always wanted?

Many owners here will probably not be inclined to answer your question about what they do for a living, as they value their privacy. The anonymity of the Internet is a wonderful thing, because it enables people who are filthy rich to rub elbows with people who are just plain filthy, and both benefit. Once people start disclosing their occupations and other details of their lives, then the cliques and caste structures begin to form and can cause people to feel inhibited.

In my case, I'm happy to let you know I'm an engineer (only because that's what my university diploma says), albeit I haven't done any real engineering in over 20 years. Most of my work in the petroleum industry over the last 20 years has been transferring western technology to companies in the 3rd world and mentoring their employees.

Good luck in your search. I sincerely hope you find something you enjoy doing and are good at. You'll be up against some very stiff competition, internationally.

High mileage, low compression, and missing on a few cylinders.....just like my cars.

Yes I do believe in what you say. My problem is being around people who can direct me in the right path. I am ok with math, but as long as I study, then I should be ok in anything. I just need someone to throw some career shoices into my head. Then I would like to know which classes to take first. I am going to start going to a community college, so I will need to take basic classes. As long as I know my career path, then I should be able to pick the rest of my classes accordingly.

I have read online about networking and talking to the right people. I just don't have that. I am a thrifty person. I only pay for food, so saving is not a problem. The problem is finding career. How did you go about doing this?

And I do beleive in my situation that the greatest reward is to be able to ride around in a very nice car and enjoy the weather with the windows down whenever I want!
