What should I know before buying a F355

Found a 1996 F355 Spider listed locally, 11,376 miles, FSBO. What has me worried is the asking price, $59,900. Seems a touch low, considering the "glowing" description that the owner gives. I've got a guy for my PPI. Am I missing something or are F355's really this "affordable"?

Wait for the results of the PPI before deciding anything...With the 355, the purchase price of the car is just the beginning of the journey. Although they are very exciting cars to own, a $15-$20K service is not out of the ordinary, particularly with cars that have not had the various known issues attended to. Some feel that the F355 is perhaps one of the most expensive Ferrari to own, from a maintenance perspective. I'd have a hard time disagreeing with those folks.

Amen

I disagree that it is low. There are 3 with a similar or better description in the current edition of Ferrari Market Letter with the same or lower price. There are a few others with price tags I can only describe as in the dreamer category.

A 96 without documentation of replacement valve guides or exhaust manifolds should be approached very carefully.

If the car was serviced at FOA call them and ask about the car.

A client of mine sold a Red/Tan 355 Spyder 6spd, 15k miles with a fresh top end rebuild, service, replaced headers, had owned the car for 7yrs. and kept all of the service history for $60k. The price of $60k is about all these cars are bringing in premium condition right now. Most guys selling a properly sorted 355 for $60k bought them for $90k several years ago and put another $40k into them making them right because they loved the car.

There aren't many of those on the market though. Most of them need everything and the seller is hoping to find an unsuspecting buyer so that he can avoid the expenses himself. A great 355 can be a real pleasure, the rest will seriously try your patience.

You definitely need to get the service records in your hands and verify them with the shops on the letterhead to CYA.

I knew about the exhaust manifold issue, but not about the valve guides. As it has been Thanksgiving, me and the owner have been playing phone-tag. I'm hoping to get a copy of all the service records. If I have time I will call FOA and see what I can find out about the car.

Is it a 2.7 or a 5.2? How's that belt change going? Is the gas tank still in the boot?

Krome, sweet looking car, and thank you for the offer. But I am trying to find a non-red Ferrari to be honest. And if it ever stops raining I'm going to try and go look at the one offered above.

David and Josh,

Would it be ok for me to call either/both of you during normal business hours at the numbers for your respective businesses? I have recently come across a 98 355 locally that says it has all the service records (and looking through the pictures, all the records appear to be kept in a three ring binder). I would love to talk, and see what I need to look for.

Was there not some serial number check that could distinguish when Ferrari switched away from the brass valve guides? I believe my serial number was after and has the updated ones. Is there any way to know for sure?
