Ed, if it were me, I'd move on.

Or, in lieu of a deposit, offer to give him a copy of the PPI. By rights, he's not entitled to receive one, since it's something you're paying for, but if you wind up walking away from the deal, it's something he can use with a future buyer (unless of course there are serious issues found that he wishes to hide.)

High mileage, low compression, and missing on a few cylinders.....just like my cars.

Never, ever, pay money up front. A decent seller will never ask for that.

Now, if you have agreed to buy the car but for some reason cannot pick it up yet, then a fairly sizeable deposit is normal. This guarantees the seller that you are actually going to come through on the deal. After I decided to buy my Maranello, I paid a €10k deposit and then picked the car up about a month later when I returned from Africa.

After the B.S. with the last 550 I may have found one.
So far So good on the Service history, I am going to see the car Thursday.
It's a red/tan 98 with 8k miles at Ferrari of Seattle.

I have also been thinking of another 550 at Foreign cars Italia.
It's an silver/gray 01 with 18k miles.

Miles vs. age, red vs. silver.

Right now if all goes well Thursday I may have my first Ferrari.......in red.

Ed- We will keep our fingers crossed for you. I am kind of fond of red Maranellos, for some reason.

Just amazing to me, I haven't seen a 550 with less than 10k miles in Europe for years! I think it's sad they don't get driven as much in the US, but on the upside the benefit is for people who buy later. Just promise me you'll drive it, OK?

Of course it was my first supercar, but it took me over 5,000 miles to really get to know my 550 (how it behaved on the limit, I mean). I can't imagine it is any different for most owners, so I must conclude a lot of them didn't really know the car they owned. That's a real shame. These cars are race horses. They should be pampered in the stable and flogged on the course!

Onno- Coming up on 20,000 miles on mine in the next month or so. Most Ferraris over here are only driven about 1000 miles per year. Mine gets a bit more because it is my DD. Took it to Kirtland AFB just to get a haircut today.

Don't have any facts to support this statement but my feeling is owners on this side of the Atlantic tend to take their Ferraris on much longer road trips than owners in North America. London to Maranello runs are fairly common here where I don't hear about too many NY to Chicago or Denver to LA road trips for example.

Terry-please stop teasing us with the fact you guys can drive your cars! First of all you tell us the weather overthere is good enough to drive, and now you're rubbing it in that you can still take your car to go for a haircut....!
1) our weather still sucks...
2) I'm bald!

But I get to go to Fled6 duh!

It's all about making the most of when the weather's good. But if you only drive it when there's no chance of rain, well, then it will stay indoors a lot!

As for your baldness - not having to going for a haircut is a blessing, IMHO. Thankfully I'm getting there too. Although, I must say, my hairdresser in Weesp knows how to employ truly stunning girls. Makes the trip less of a chore.

Man what happened to Barbers?
I still have the same one from the age of 25....one could say that we have grown wiser together or older depending on ones interpretation.

Now he does happen to be my wife's hairdresser but he is "my barber"

Jeroen- I have so little hair I get a discount at the barber's, but the fringe still grows. Good looking barbers would be a perk, but my haircuts only cost $8 plus tip.

Sorry about the weather, but facts is facts, it is dry here. Humidity was 16% at 6 pm, low yesterday was -6C, high was 15C. Today the low was 2C, high will be 16C. No snow predicted until next week.

Just to make you feel better, we lose quite a bit of hp at 1800 meters, probably a bit more than 100 hp, although the Motronic system does play with ignition advance to make up for some of that. So there are disadvantages to living this high. Not too good for fuel consumption, either.

I don't know, they disappeared from Holland loooooong before I was born. I have never, ever seen a barber shop in the Netherlands.

Hello again all

With your help and opinions I just bought my first Ferrari.
A 98 550 Maranello, red/tan.
The car will get a service and some "sticky" dash taken care of and then be shipped to me.

Can't thank you enough for the help along the way.

I'll try to get some pix up so you can check her out.

Thanks again.

Ed- I love a happy ending. Will look forward to photos as soon as you get her. Looks like you got a really good deal with an asking price of $79K.
