Default 250 GTO Crash Rumour

Internet rumours are building surrounding a Ferrari 250 GTO that was wrecked on its way to LeMans Classic this weekend. Reports suggest that chassis number 3445GT was involved in an accident while trying to turn off the D766 in Northern France. It was hit from behind by another driver attempting to overtake while the Ferrari turned left. Four people are reported to have been taken to hospital including the American driver.

The cars were travelling to the LeMans Classic this weekend as part of the regular 250 GTO tour.

The pictures below show the blue and yellow 250 GTO in question at the earlier stages before the accident.

Hopefully some truth behind the rumours surface soon and become more clear regarding the accident and the injured people.

Unfortunately, it's not a rumour. This accident happened near Blois on Sat 7 July at 10:47

This is the best translation I could find:

Four wounded including a serious, Friday. The driver of a Ferrari 250 GTO has been seriously affected in Saint-Étienne-des-Guérets, West of Blois (41). His car collection was struck by another car which the doubled while she was preparing to turn left, according to the police. Three other people were more slightly hurt.
Aside from injuries, there are also material and financial. The Ferrari GTO destroyed in the clash was one of 39 copies existing in the world. This model of car is ripped in June last at $ 35 million
thanks babelfish

I understand at least two of the injured are relatively 'ok'. She, driving had a broken ankle and more bangs etc. was the worst of that car: Good. how terrible it could have been.

I doubt seriously the car will be totaled, nada, no way even if it takes 5-10mill to make it right again.....could be wrong, but seen fire damage on less expensive cars get the entire re-do.

so sad to see. i have photographed that car many times. i think the owner recently purchased it and it won cavallino i believe. either way, beautiful car.

you can't total a 250 gto unless the chassis # is completely demolished. even then.......

Great pics Ed. This is the GTO that owned by C. Cox correct? So I'm understanding that it was sold to a new owner recently? If so, Motion Products restored that car from nearly scratch and did a fantastic job. The colors look great in person.

Josh, it still belongs to Mr Cox. Here is an article about the accident.

US businessman Christopher Cox was driving the Ferrari 250 GTO in France when it was reportedly hit by another vehicle attempting to overtake it.

The multi-millionaire was travelling with his wife Ann, who is understood to have suffered a broken leg during the smash.

Mr Cox had been taking part in the 50th anniversary tour of the Ferrari 250 GTO – an Italian sports car regarded as "the Picasso of the motoring world".

It is thought the Ferrari – one of just 39 ever built – is worth upwards of £20million. The incident took place outside Saint-Etienne-des Guirets, near Blois, in France.

As part of the five-day tour, the enthusiasts drove the iconic Gueux racing circuit in Reims before visiting the Abbey of Hautvillers, the home of Dom Pirignon champagne.

The Italian convoy, thought to have had a value close to £500million, was en route to Le Mans when the accident happened on Friday morning. Two passengers in the other car were taken to nearby hospital, according to French reports.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and JCB boss Sir Anthony Bamford were two of 21 groups of multi-millionaire Ferrari fans taking part in the 50th anniversary jaunt.

Ferrari built the 250 GTO between 1962 and 1964 and flogged its 174mph sports car with a £6,000 price-tag.

The model involved in Friday’s crash left the factory in April 1962 with the chassis number 3445GT.

Initially red, the car was re-sprayed blue with a yellow central stripe in 1963 to honour race driver Ulf Norinder’s Swedish nationality. The car was later re-bodied but crashed in 1976 and underwent a full restoration with Mr Cox buying the car in 2005.

The value of the 250 GTO has skyrocketed in recent years with one green model built for Stirling Moss selling last month for a world record £22.7 million.

Chris Evans is also understood to have sold his model recently for somewhere in the region of £18million.

No car accident is a good one, but none the less having seen this car in person and knowing how much work went into it from so many people it is sad to hear of the accident.

Glad to hear injuries aren't any worse than they are, hopefully the car won't need reconstructive surgery either.

yes, cox. i was under the (maybe mistaken) impression that he recently bought it and restored it. my recently and yours may be different, just don't remember it on the scene more than 5 years ago. recently (last several years) it has been everywhere. I think i have seen it 10 times.

looks like he bought it seven years ago and went on the circuit about 5 years ago. relatively recently for an old guy like me.

it's good to know those involved in the wreck are safe and on the mend...

phunny... just an osbervation...there are not any photos of the cars involved posted anywhere. .. usually there are all sorts of images posted everywhere on the internet with far lesser cars... seems a bit unusual when compared to other incidents more obscure being posted all over the internet...

what's even more odd is the other car's occupants and their injuries?!!?

heard they went to the hospital too, and they were driving a GTO also. Don't get it.

TWO 250 GTO involved in the same incident... !!! Is that absolutely correct ???

Wow ! This is becoming more curiouser and curiouser... :=)

that could be the rub that is surpressing images, there is a lot of value at stake which could affect these cars in the future and how they could be treated along with the rest

I think there is more to this story - a lot more.

Wish everyone involved a speedy recovery.
