If that was the restaurant on University that we used to end up at, Bloomer, in his Daytona, and I, in my Four Cam, had a funny thing happen after one of those events. There was a HUGE parking lot. We got there fairly early and parked waaaaay on the other side of the lot, far away from any other cars, for obvious reasons.

When we got out, there were no other cars near us, except a VW beetle who had very carefully parked between us. It looked great. He barely had room, but made it with no issues.

We were careful not to ding him when we left.

Sorry, don't remember anything about where the restaurant was. don't remember who came up with this as the location but it could have been Bloomer as someone knew where it was and how to get there from the raceway.

Do remember I talked to Steve Earle about if he wanted to join us or go with the other group. He opted out of both as he had some meeting to get to.

If I find my pic of a three year old BMW 1600 I bought in 1970, would that count? It was the first car I ever bought.

Back then, the ONLY requirement to join the Ferrari Owners Club was you had to love the brand! Not everyone, including me at first, had a Ferrari.

Default Tijuana Taxi at Mark Dees' Ranch

Mark Dees' used to host a beautiful picnic on the grounds of his ranch, which I think was sort of Santa Barbara'ish in location, actually a bit south of there.

It was an elegant setting, a huge and beautiful lawn ringed in Ferraris.

So, it seemed entirely appropriate to take Larry Bloomer's '57 Chevy from high school and make it a Tijuana Taxi.

There was a beautiful spot dead center at the top of the lawn, so we felt certain they had saved it for us.

Larry Crane took the photos and just sent them to me. Anyone who remembers the event should comment!!!

The close up is Mark Dees, our host.

In the photo:

Diane Bloomer with the guitar.

"Gypsy Woman" to Diane's right was my wife at the time, Jacquelyn.

I'm in the priest's outfit trying to bring a little salvation to the group.

Might be Gary Snell in black to my right.

Bloomer is in the tall sombrero with the red dingleballs.

Ken Starbird and Rosie on the blanket.

I think Brad Balles, our wingman, had the Chevy wagon in the background.

David.

Time is relavent to memories not numbers on the face of a clock.

I am now in possession of my 7th Ferrari. My first was a 250 2+2. I purchases the car with a new engine from Bruno at Modena sports cars in Hwd for $3500 in 1967.

My 330 #9806 was purchased later that year for $8200. In late 71 I purchased my 275GTB4 from Thompson , the then owner of Beverly Hills RR..$10500.

The point to be made is that we all drove the cars daily. Track days were compelling and the group dynamics were the corner stone of our good memories.

Many of us remember the first Laguna Seca vintage car race as well as the first LB Grand Prix. The Ferrari tent on the Queen ann turn was fun. What about the Virginia City Hill climb?

Standing with Paul Newman at Willow as he was preparing for Daytons was a great experience. I traveled to Daytona Twice to watch and assist during the races.

Larry must talk about the Palm Springs Brain Bake Parties.David provided the ideal crash pad.

Was the Tijuana Taxi picnic the same as the hobo event? The hobo deal was the counter to Larry Gosh's version of going upscale. I remember Larry and Diane as being the hobo organizers.

That was also the Mark Dees picnic that led to the Dubious Achievement Award. An award trophy that Bloomer accidentally drove over because he got the Daytona in the wrong. Larry might not have passed a breath test at that moment.

We did the hobo event at a different time. We bought old clothes and about a half dozen of us came as bums. The kicker is that we didn't bring any food. It was supposed to be a picnic, but we just panhandled for eats.

We did fine.

Gary, great to see you on here. I don't have contact info for Chuck, but somebody should. Pretty sure he is back east.

We need to get Bloomer in this mix! I'll email him.

With a finite budget, it was hard to say the least. Owned it for several years and criscrossed the US both ends several times with this one.

After working and living in Massachusetts for two+ years, my last trip was from Springfield, Massachusetts to LA, California by myself. I was in a hurry and with no money to spare, I decided to blast thru the continent. My first day, I started from Springfield, MA thru Conn, NY crossing the Washington Bridge, thru Pennsylvania, and thru other states all the way to Indiana, I believe where I had to stop to take a nap along the roadside. Then, it was thru Oklahoma and few more states in between down to either New Mexico or Arizona where I had to take a nap again, roadside. From there, it was all the way to LA, CA. I clocked myself at the time and if I recall it was 56 hours trip from MA to CA.

PS. Sorry, it's the first pic of the two. I believe that was taken somewhere along the trip in Texas or New Mexico.

The second pic was several years later in LA with my lemon Mini Cooper. That is another story in itself.

Sorry Jimmy i had to haha....Those jeans were outstanding way ahead of its time!

Cheers

Yes, Chuck is on the East Coast. I have his e-mail.

Looking forward to seeing Larry here.

Bloomer brought the Chevy for the hobo too. I want Larry to talk about the private session at Ontario in the Porsche racecar of the San Diego dealer.

Who still has some of the old FOC magazines with the Queener covers? I still have a group of them.

Can someone reach Larry Crane to have him join us here?

Anyone have a copy of People magazine with the article on when the Carradines came to Riverside for a shakedown run with the Daytona? Also in attendance that day were Clint & Maggie Eastwood with the Monterey Ferrari dealer Ray Ramsey.

Bloomer can give the story of how Allesandro was awarded the Dubious Achievement award at Virginia City in 1977.

I got the Tijuana Taxi shots from Larry and encouraged him to participate. He is buried in work right now, but will join in later.

Okay, I'm home now, and had a chance to check my database on history for 3269 GT (the Bertone SWB that was once owned by Bill).

Some cool stuff about this car. First, during his time at Bertone, Giugiaro was the one who designed this car - a bitchin' little piece of information, I think.

Of the two Bertone-built SWBs, this was the second, built on a street chassis and equipped with 240 bhp. It may have had some padded leather and a handsome hand brake, but that didn't make it a competition car - and its steel body didn't help either. It was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 1962.

In Pourret's The Ferrari Legend, it's mentioned on pages 119, 133 and 367; it's pictured on pages 133 and 134.

In 1971, a 250 GT SWB Berlinetta "Speciale" was offered for sale in San Diego. It was advertised as serial number 3569, but it may very well have been this car.

For owner Lorenzo Zambrano, Steve Tillack entered this car in the 1994 International Ferrari Concours in Monterey, CA, where it did not win an award. Zambrano himself entered it in the '96 National Ferrari Concours at Watkins Glen in NY and won the platinum class award, the Enzo Ferrari Memorial Award, and the All'abaticolo Piu Autentico award. A year later Zambrano entered it at Pebble Beach and won second in class and the Luigi Chinetti award. Zambrano owned it since at least 1981 until at least '04; it's not clear if he still owns it (though I'd be surprised if he sold it).

Bill started a thread back in September, 2009, on the other site, detailing his ownership of this car. It was silver - Bill's the one who had it painted blue. It was his only car and he drove it everyday. Since he was a professional drummer at the time, Bill loaded his drums into this car whenever he moved from one club to the next, playing six nights a week. Two guys at Modena Sport Cars in Los Angeles maintained the car for Bill, and he eventually sold it in the late '70s, at which time it had about 100K on the odometer.

Here's the picture I took back in August, 2004:
