Default Ferrari Model Nameplates

I notice the more modern ferraris generally don't seem to have external model nameplates. I know the 612 scallietti does. and the 430 is etched into the mirror. But it looks like they dropped model designations on the back around the 355. Haven't seen this topic discussed. Maybe discuss the history of model nameplates for ferrari.

OH, forgot the 16m. maybe they ran out after that?

Ed- Seems to vary. Early 575Ms did not have 575M script, but later models did. Does not say Maranello on the 550 or 575M and there is no 550 script on the 550s. Both have Pininfarina badges on the sides.

Every day I look around, and if nobody is shooting at me, it is a pretty good day.

Ed- Affirmative. Plus they only say 575M Maranello on the inside.

Are you sure? I had always understood that the external badge was an option.

Jonathan- It is not on any option list I have and is on all the 04 and 05 cars and some 03s. It appears to have been added to some earlier cars by dealers and owners.

The only consistency with Ferrari model names is the erratic inconsistency. The California has a script, and the 599 GTO had a badge; no badge for the "regular" 599 or the Scuderia, but the F430 has the indentation in the mirror (as has already been pointed out), and the 16M has the badge on the rear. I don't recall seeing a 575M badge on an '05 575M, but it's a great way to spot an '04; the '02s and '03s that have them were given them after market. But the 360 Modena and the 360 Spider didn't have badges - but the Stradale has a script on the rear grille.

It looks like Ferrari has moved away from badging each model, and reserving visible identification for the subsequent model iterations and the limited editions. On the V8 line, the last production model to bear a model name badge was the 355, and on the V12s, the last production model to wear a model name badge was the Testarossa. Now Ferrari is only making the uninitiated aware of the "upgraded" models and limited runs.

Hmmm. Well I'm sure it isn't on all 04 and 05 cars as far as UK and Euro cars go. Perhaps US cars were different. I'll see if I can find out.

As has already been pointed out above, the 612 does.

It's in the challenge grill, says 430 SCUD.

I'd post a photo, but I'm in Prague and the Internet here is aweful.

I like the less stuff on mine, although the Mondial T has a lot of items on it.

Simple, plain, is nice. Having said that I contantly am asked 'what model it that' [456]. I have always tried to acquire the license plate stating such but it's so cryptic it makes no sense. Even when I tell them you can see they have no correlation to the number's meaning which sometimes launches me into a "this is the Ferrari numbering system...." whereupon their eyese glaze over when I start multiplying the cylinder capacities and indicating total lit. measurments: matter of fact my fingers are tired just typing this nonsense.

Carbon- As far as I know, the 575M is on all the 05s. Here is Cariad's old car, 141041, a very late 05.

Taz, I love the Santa Fe look too: somehow make me feel at home.

Rik- Last time I was at Cariad's house, he had a new 458 and I drove my 575M. His house is a real classic Santa Fe style house in, of all places, Santa Fe.

Thanks, Terry. I tend to defer to your expertise on matters concerning Maranellos; but I think I've seen too few '05s to have made my earlier statement in the first place. I'm not at home that much these days, but when I get back tonight, I'll try to remember to check what pictures I have of '05s and see if they all have badges.

Also thanks for the serial number on Cariad's old car; I'm not sure I have it.

Carbon- You have it and the Assembly Number. It was one of the first entries in my database. That is the car Florida dealers were using as bait and switch for months after he sold the car. She had just about all the options except F1 and HGTC.

Incidentally, I doubt there were more than 250 MY05 cars built, and much fewer here in the States.
