Default BMW Hot Rod

The recent "would you" thread instigated this post.

This E30 1987 convertible has been with me since 1992. These cars are extremely rare in South Africa with less than 30 cars in the country.

It was originally purchased with a 6 cylinder 2500cc motor and after driving it for a year I did a few mods to improve its performance.

The engine is a 3500cc 24valve producing 225kw from an E34 M5 and is mated to an overdrive 5 speed gearbox from an E28 M5.

Very nice Peter. I do like the E30 shape.

What's the story with the missing headlight on the drivers side?

Barry thank you....it was removed for an air duct to channel air into the K&N air filter.
As the ABS pump is locate directly underneath the air filter I could not channel air from the bottom so compromised by removing the high beam lamp.

Thought it might have something to do with air flow

Love the wheels but they must be a b1tch to clean!

There's a guy around here that has an E30 M3 with an M5 V10 in it... looks stock when you first lay eyes on it. Crazy! Enjoy!

I had an '86 BMW 3 series when I lived in Europe. I loved that little car and miss it. It was a lot of fun.

Very nice! Indeed rare, have never seen one in SA before. Must go like a rocket with that musical M5 motor, one of the sweetest sounding motors ever.

David thank you it certainly does wake one up.

I am exceptionally fond of this car and derive much pleasure from driving it and on occasion scaring myself.

how is the chassis flex on a convertible with that much power? did you do any bracing?

Yes I brace myself every time I drive it

It has a fair amount of bracing from the factory and I have modified a X member to reinforce the chassis legs at the bottom where ordinarily the sump guard would be mounted.
It has definitely reduced the amount of scuttle shake but if you throw it into a bend with gusto it will let you know that it is unhappy.....
