TO ALL OF US KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE.... 1930's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's ~ First, we survived being born to Mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us. They took Aspirin, ate Blue-Cheese Dressing, Tuna from a Can, and didn't get tested for Diabetes. Then after that Trauma, our Baby Cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based Paints. We didn't even have Childproof Lids on Medicine Bottles, locks on Doors or Cabinets and when we rode our Bikes we had no Helmets. And that's not to mention, the Risks we took while hitchhiking. As Children, we road in Cars with no Seat Belts or Air Bags. Riding in the Back of a Pick-Up on a warm Day was always considered a special Treat. We drank water from the Garden Hose and NOT from a Bottle. We shared one Soft Drink with four Friends ... most of the time from one Bottle ... and NO ONE actually died from this. We ate Candy, REAL Ice Cream, Cupcakes, Chocolate Chip Cookies, white Bread and real Butter. We drank Soda Pop with Sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING! We would leave Home in the Morning and play all Day, as long as we were back when the Streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day, but they knew where we were and who we were with. And we were O.K. We would spend hours building or repairing our Bikes, Go-Carts and Skate Boards. Then we'd ride them down the biggest Hill in the neighborhood, only to find out we forgot about the Brakes. After running into the Bushes at the bottom of the hill a few times, we learned to solve the Problem. We didn't have Playstations, X-Boxes or Nintendo. In fact, we had no Video Games at all. No 99 Channels on Cable TV ... We just had 3. We didn't have Video Tape or DVD Movies, no Surround Sound, No Cell Phones, no Personal Computers, no Internet or Internet Chat Rooms. But we had FRIENDS ... and we just went Outside and found them! When we played, we sometimes fell out of trees, got cuts and bruises, and even broke a bone or two, but there were no Lawsuits from these Accidents. These things just happened. It was PART of growing up. Yes, we ate Worms and Mud Pies made from Dirt, but the Worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB Guns and Sling-shots for our 10th Birthdays. We made up games with Sticks and Balls (or rocks) and although we were told it WOULD happen sooner or later, we didn't Put Out an Eye. We rode Bikes or WALKED to a Friend's House. We didn't need to get a ride. And we knocked on the Door, rang the Bell, or just yelled for them and they came right out! The Little League Team had Spring Tryouts ... and not Everyone made the Team. Those who didn't, had to learn to deal with Disappointment. And they did so without having to go to a therapist. Imagine That!! The idea of our Parents bailing us out if we broke the Law was unheard of. They actually sided with the Law! And depending on what we did, when we got home we got grounded, spanked, and/or sent to our room with out supper. And there weren't any TV's, DVD's, Video Games or Computers up there. Not even a phone!!! OMG, that HAD to be child abuse!!! In spite of ALL of the things we HAD to endure as we grew up, This Generation has produced some of the very best Risk-Takers, Problem Solvers and Inventors ever seen in this county's history! The past 50 Years have been an Explosion of Innovation and new Ideas. LOOKING BACK ... WE had it ALL ... Freedom, Guidance, Failure, Success and Responsibility. And we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! And YOU are one of Them! ~~ CONGRATULATIONS! ~~ You might want to share this with Others who have had the Luck to grow up as 'Kids', before the Lawyers and the Government regulated our Lives For Our Own 'Good'. And while you are at it, forward this page to your Kids so they will know how brave their Parents really were. Kind of makes you want to run through the House with Scissors in your hand, doesn't it?! It's the way it was! Remember my friends and I ran away a few times - after 4 or 5 hours we always came back by dinner |
