Default My Automotive Picture Frames

Thanks to Andrew for clearing this.

A while back, I became aware of a great guy on here called Miha Furlan. On seeing his works, I had to have some of his original drawings. I contacted him and bought some of his drawings. A while later, he did some commissioned pieces for me. I cannot say enough on the insane detail he can capture with pens and pencils. I really do not know how he does it, but he does it very well.

Any Motorsport art done by hand has a very personal touch associated with it, especially if its an original piece, or if you have had it commissioned.

Given all of the above, I set about looking for suitable frames to display said art. I have a small collection of original drawings from across the globe that mean a lot to me, so I wanted them displayed accordingly.

To cut a long story short, I bought a lot of frames, and I wasn't happy with any of them. The nicest ones I bought were possibly the matt black frames, but the rears of the frames were just the standard run of the mill hardboard, and clips. Very ugly when sat on my desk, where you can also see the rears.

So thats when I decided to design proper frames, that gave the art a quality setting that it deserved. I wanted the frames pretty minimal, but stylish, and also wanted them to incorporate quality materials unlike any other on the market.
It was also important of course, for them to offer a strong material and feel connection that directly related to the drawings displayed within them, further stimulating the viewer.

I also wanted the stand to be removable, so that the frames could be moved from desk displays, to wall displays, in a matter of seconds.

So heres what I came up with below, I hope you like.

The materials are, anodized aluminium, pre-preg carbon fibre, stainless steel, rubber, rock maple and lexan. I also gave the three frame prototypes build plates, showing construction date, part number, and display object stamp.

Everything you see above was made in house in my small prototyping workshop, mainly by hand. Ive decided to make a limited run of these of around 20 maximum incase anyone wishes to obtain a frame with a difference-as I did.

Im setting up a basic website which should be up and running by next week, Ill post details once everything is in place.

As I mentioned to Andrew last month, this is not an advert, or sales pitch, I have a day job, its just wanted to share on here as Im sure some share similiar feelings towards art, design, and all things cars
Nothing like these exist, so you saw them here first

Brian Garvey!

Brian- Those look great. Very industrial but modern and the materials and lightening holes really go together well.

Terry, thanks a lot for your comments. Given the fact that nobody has seen them until now, what you said means a lot.

Brett, I will do, I must decide on a price of the actual frame too, that would be a start I guess!

Sure. At the minute, the three I have made are for displaying A4, but I can scale up or down I guess.

Brian.

Outstanding and great use of industrial materials.

These would be awesome - please include me when you get a price list together.

One suggestion - powder coating / anodizing a few parts in Ferrari Red

Thanks a lot folks, the interest shown is really something considering they were just an idea one night.

Doug, colour anodising would not be a problem I guess If further customisation was needed.

Hope to get some sort of price together soon, they will cost a little, materials are not that cheap, and frame is machined from a single plate, but we shall see!

Brian!

Still at the pricing of these. Looks like they are going to be pretty dear. I could get some carbonfibre from far overseas, with a minimum batch order of 50 pieces, but Im not sure I want to make that many as I want to keep the run of a more limited production.

Ill look ober prices once more and let you all know the news. The materials are not cheap and are of the best quality. Perhaps Ill aim to just do commissioned pieces for those who really want them.

Another picture for the time being,

The man himself, the god of Automotive Illustrators Mr Tony Matthews, looking on with approval with one of his masterpieces fitted!

Special thanks to Tim Charles Matthews for the photography, and of course Tony himself for the very kind feedback.

Talk soon guys,

Thanks all, they are really a labour of love by the time everything is done, but I think they are worth it.
Cobbled together a desk light too to fit in with them. Only one of those made yet though, lot of figuring out with that one.
