I think I mostly agree with this list. I question why some guitarists like Brian May, Les Paul or Mark Knoffler aren't a bit higher in ranking.

Seems like a few may be missing also... For example, no Joe Satriani, John Sykes or Gary Moore.

What do you guys think?

Willie Nelson? Curt Cobain?? They're not guitarists.
Captain Kangaroo strummed better than those two. Sang better too.
And Dickey Betts down at 61?! Sixty-first?? They're smokin crack.
Now, I would never ever blasphemy the Beatles, but George Harrison, as good as he was, wasn't worthy of carrying Chet Atkins' guitar case.
And where are true greats like Andre Segovia, John Williams, Peter White, Jesse Cook, and Otmar Leibert?
Oh yeah, and where's David Byrne?

Phooey - That list is nothing more than a popularity contest.

Number 1 in my book.
John Petrucci of Dream Theater.

Not sure about Hendrix being #1 over the likes of Clapton Page and Richards?
Never took to Hendrix I think he was to "noisy" and disconnected in his playing.....I used to think that he made it up whilst he was playing....now that I am older I know that he made it up depending on the high he was on.

Nice call out for John Petrucci. I'm wondering where George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai or Zakk Wylde are on this list also.

Hell this chick is better than some of the ones that made it on this list.

everybody else is sure. including clapton, page and richards. it is interesting that you use the word disconnected. I would describe him as the most connected in his playing. His connectedness to his guitar was unbelievable. his ability to play the guitar upside down and backwards and not being able to read or write music really underscore his complete mastery of the instrument. Not to mention behind his back, head and with his teeth. only guitarist i ever saw make a broken, on fire guitar sound good.

here is what clapton's band thought about jimi, clapton and hendrix became close friends. When jimi died, clapton went downhill.

Jimi, thanks for the post. It got me thinking about great guitarists on this boring thanksgiving and i was able to go back through some music i love.

RE hendrix. i guess the best way to explain why he is perennially called the best guitarist ever, even by the best guitarists is that he was revolutionary. Being revolutionary usually doesn't buy you that much popularity, but for hendrix, it did. Clapton, page, et al are technically excellent and have made some really catchy pop songs. A combination that will guarantee popularity. This is the reason people like buddy guy, who is a better guitar player, never got popular. Then you have people that are technically superior like petrucci, satriani and malmsteen.

But to be the best ever, you have to be revolutionary. Really, hendrix stands alone. Think Picasso. Lots of artists are technically proficient and/or popular but picasso alone showed his mastery of art and was revolutionary. You might not personally like woman with both eyes on one side of their face. You might perceive some music as noise. But if you know what they are doing, you have to give them the credit. here are two truly revolutionary guitar performances. The first one is more accessible than the second one. But the second one was truly revolutionary. It's about changing what is possible for all those that come after you.

this kind of playing changed guitar playing forever.

Jimmy Page is in it with him. Speaking of him, I think the best guitarist of all time can be summed up in this clip:

Nice. I think Page has been summed a number of times. This post Zep rendition of Gallows Pole is one of my favorites.

my favorite band of all time. i also probably like to listen to page play the most of any guitarist, but that is subjective. i never really got into clapton because he was in serious decline during my impressionable years.

Same here. He is definitely a great one but Page can write a lick that is so memorable. Plus the sound quality and instruments, the old tube amps....Zeppelin sounded HUGE.

Just got this from richard at competizione, one of our sponsors. it's his 12 yo twins on drums and guitar. Skip to 4:40 to see some pretty good guitar work.

It gives me hope that 12 years know who Eric Johnson is! That was phenomenal.
