Default Spyker finds a buyer

Spyker sold to a U.S. private equity firm North Street Capital

Looking forward to seeing what North Street Capital has in mind for Spyker.

Always really liked the car - a good friend of mine is a dealer in Louisville and thinks the new ownership is going to make a big difference.

They sold for $43.5 million. That is actually a pretty small number for a business. I would think this means their sales aren't more than $15 million/year. How many cars are they producing per year?

Not many. I know the London Spyker dealer and it can't be more than a dozen or two out of London yearly.

in 08 and 09 they sold less than 50 cars per year. those were bad years for the car industry. i don't think it's much improved for 2010. my guess- still around 50 worldwide. The us sales guy told me but i forget. i remember it was way under 100 though.

I like Spyker. unfortunately PE firms don't have good track records owning car companies (see also: Chrysler)

I hope this works out, they make some great cars, really unique, excellent attention to detail.

I would not bet the ranch on that company.

I think a handful were sold here in US and I do not believe there are any dealers here now either.

Very quirky car as Boxer said.

There are a bunch of dealers - one which I mentioned and located in Louisville believe it or not

The Spyker does sell - not huge numbers but everyones estimates are way low.

I think British Motor cars who took over Silicon Valley Auto Sales in Los gatos may still have the franchise, but in this area of Northern california I'd bet they are the only ones.

Galpin in LA has a franchise; so does Ferrari of Denver. both have Spykers in inventory, if you're so inclined.

my numbers were not estimates. they were provided by spyker. they sold less than 50 cars in 2008 and 2009. Don't have the 2010 numbers in writing, but was given them by the gentleman in the pic above. He is the head of north american sales. 2011 isn't over yet. The sales numbers are worldwide sales.

How can they survive with miniscule sales numbers like that?

My Ferrari was originally owned by LeMans racer John Hans Hugenholtz, a founder and one-time CEO of Spyker. He negotiated the sale of Spyker F1 to Force India as well as staying with C8 over the other models for financial reasons, and finally the purchase of SAAB for Victor Meuller. He lost a great deal of money on that company yet felt it was worth every penny. Timing of the world's economy played a large part right after Spyker started. We Emailed a few times and I kick myself every time I think about never having visited the Spyker factory. John is a great guy!

PS - His dad (same name) designed Suzuka- the next F1 race event.

No offense but - that is an unaudited press release.

I can make one of those in 15 minutes that could read I am a billionaire and 15 minutes later I could create one to read I am broke.

Please read below from their website

Total order backlog increased from 191 as per 31 December 2005 (which consisted of 161 C models and 30 Spykers D12 Peking-to-Paris) to 286 orders per 31 March 2006 (increase of 95 cars in this first quarter of 2006). This number consists of 166 C models and 120 orders for the new Spyker D12 Peking-to-Paris which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on 28 February 2006. The order intake for C models was 30 cars in the first quarter of 2006.
Company operationally cash flow positive as from the first quarter, 2006.
The company expects to produce more than 100 cars in 2006, doubling its 2005 production output.

*****

My friend who is a dealer - sold many 2006 2007 models brand new last year and this year as did many other dealers.

so if i understand your point, the factory lied to the press? They certainly knew how many cars they sold as the numbers were generated after the sales. your quote clearly states that they produced 50 cars in 2005. They expected to double that to 100 in 2006. 2005 was about the top of the worldwide economy. the numbers (around 50/year) for the much worse years of 2008 and 2009 seem quite in line. You still have not provided any information that they produced any more than around 50 cars/year up till 2010. my conversation with some one who knows corroborates those numbers. Why in the world would spyker be deliberately be misleading people, on the low side, about their sales? I could almost buy them inflating them, but not deflating them. Until then, i'm gonna need more information to believe the 2011 numbers are more than 50-100 cars.

the revenue reported for half year (till june 30, 2009) 2009 was 4.1m euro. Unaudited as it is, i would imagine a press release would inflate that, not under report it. That comes out to about 20 odd cars 4.1m divided by 20-23. double that for the whole year (approximately) and you come up with just under 50 cars. All the numbers add up to 50/year. Not sure how you can dispute that with a dealer you know saying he sold "many" cars.
