Booking the cavallino show got me thinking about this. getting ready to book something down there if anyone is interested. think i have kevin and ken on the hook. that would leave one more seat in the car. I will remind everybody this is an epic show every year. this year in particular because they are featuring the ferrari 250 gto and the shelby daytona. unbelievable! plus an rm auction and several awesome seminars. being on amelia island at the ritz in march ain't bad either.

Default This is a show to attend

If you have the means, and are a automotive enthusiast, the Amelia Islancd Concours is a must attend event, at least once. And since it is the 50th anniversary of the GTO, that makes it even better. There will be a good 250 cars of all manner on the show field with special attention always paid to race cars with a number of classes.

Then there are the auctions with RM and Gooding putting up some high end cars. You also have the Spyker boys, a Veyron or two, plus some other makes rolling around, all taking place at the Ritz...

Gee, how do you get in for free?

If that's possible, my wife and I might fly in from Santa Fe.

Are there any not too expensive motels near by?

special, limited hook up on the passes. the concours is only $50 so i don't think it would be worth it to fly in for $50 anyway.

as far as the hotels go, we rent a condo or home on the island and there are some very good deals. 2brs can be had for $100/night. we will be renting a 3 or 4br and expect to pay less than $60pp/night. A great show. see you down there.

Default Days to go?

On Friday, this looks very interesting:

Friday, March 9, 2012, 4pm
Ferrari vs. Cobra, The Battle for the World Championship for Sports Cars Seminar
Panel will include Peter Brock, Mauro Forghieri, Carroll Shelby, and David Piper
Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island - Talbot Ballroom

But to my mind, nothing as interesting on Saturday.

Sunday, of course, is the show.

What days are people planning to go?

Actually, Saturday is just as interesting in some senses. You have the auction going on right there at the Ritz. You can watch the cars roll in and roll out and bid if so inclined. The seminars take place plus there is the preloading of the field. Checking out the tractor trailor parking is very interesting, seeing just what shiny objects are hidden inside those trailers is fascinating.

Attached are all Saturday shots.

regards

ken

yes, in some ways saturday can be as good. a lot less people and they do put many cars on the field the day before. Gives you a chance to do a lot of the non show stuff, like the vendors, before the show. Very difficult to enjoy this whole thing in one day.

Of course, ken and I know the real secret. Get there before the show on sunday( but not at sunrise!!!) and stay after. Less people. Need a special ticket to get on the field before the show though.

You have to either have media credentials, volunteer or be an entrant to gain early access. As far as getting there at sunrise, I like to get there prior to sunrise to get in position to get the best photos.

And I agree, Saturday is a really strong day to walk around. You get a chance to meet some of the owners in a much more casual atmosphere. You also can get rides in the spykers and high end mercedes and such. You can also walk around with a friend's steering wheel only to get it dented by some broad with a huge rolex.

good stuff.

if the gto's and daytonas weren't enough, now mercedes is bringing the 1952 le mans winning 300SL. the actual car. They will also have the 2013 SL550.

"The iconic Le Mans-winning 300SL coupe entered by Bruce and Jolene McCaw is the honored centerpiece among a collection of Mercedes-Benz racing and production cars on the 18th fairway of the Golf Club at Amelia Island on Sunday, March 11, 2012."

Truly going to be epic!!
