+1. However, I believe Mr. Jobs with his character and wisdom, can and do accept the inevitable, therefore, yes, tough times but a very fortunate man who found what he love doing and did it. Jimmy

He's the Ben Franklin/Thomas Edison of our times (admittedly a US-bias perspective).

I wish him and all the employees of Apple well.

He is the most remarkable business leader that I have ever met. Yesterday was a very sad day for many of us.

Alan the guy came back repeatedly with tons of class.

I am sure it's a lot tougher from your perspective ... for me it's a bummer for you it's life changing.

My hard drive went out on the computer and just returned with a new desk top.

I asked the salesperson how the mood was - she looked at me and said I can't change what was meant to be nor can I change what he represents forever as she gave me a big smile.

BTW - Store was packed and I got a $100 Itunes card

The writing has been on the wall for a while but it's still a tough pill to swallow. The saving grace though is that he was surrounded by people who have worked with him for the last 20 years and they learned a lot during that time.

Glad to hear you had a good shopping experience in the store :-)

Steve did a good job of building a culture at Apple and the fact that the replacement is from inside is a big plus. Bringing in outside CEOs only seems to work in turnaround situations, which wouldn't happen in the first place is values and missions are set and adhered to.

Never owned an apple or apple product so I cannot comment on them. On the other hand, Steven Jobs stole the technology he started with from Xerox some 40 years ago. Then bill gates stole it from Steven Jobs. If you want a brief history, you might want to read this article:

Xerox PARC, Apple, and the Creation of the Mouse : The New Yorker

If you want in depth, you should read this book:

Amazon.com: Dealers of Lightning: Xerox PARC and the Dawn of the Computer Age (9780887309892): Michael A. Hiltzik: Books

Neither Jobs or Gates were the masterminds behind the technology of computing and it is unfortunate that Xerox got the raw end of the deal. However, you have to give them both credit for stealing and taking advantage of it because it made them icons and extremely wealthy.

No offense but that's like saying the Indians invented herbicides by urination.

It's all about building a better mouse trap

Yeah...whatever. The man built Apple twice and Pixar once. I'm not ready to jump into a black turtleneck, but the man possesses a business acumen that is second to none. Sure, he has shit in more than his fair share of loafers, but that's par for the course when you are playing at his level. He has a record of success that few can ever hope to duplicate.

I have to respectfully disagree. You should read the book, then comment. I spent a semester in Grad school analyzing this subject matter and what most people do not realize, the basic computing technology that we are using today (e.g., windows programs, laser printer, mouse, email, ethernet, desk top computing etc,) was all created by Xerox some 40 years ago. Granted, Xerox was plain stupid not to protect their IP back then and individuals like Jobs and Gates stole the technology. LIke I said, you have to give them credit for taking advantage of their reverse engineering (e.g., Japanese manufacturers) and building dynasties, nobody is claiming they are not successful, but one should understand how they got there and not give them credit they do not deserve.

Funny thing, the VP at Xerox that lead that group of scientist in the 70's gave a presentation to our class (I attended grad school in CT, not far from the Xerox headquarters) and it was just amazing to sit and listen to this guy talk about the whole situation back in the 70's and how they got those people, the creation of technology and how the exec's at Xerox flat out rejected the modern office workspace that all the employees loved at the exhibitions (i.e., fully functional computing office with desktop, laser printer, email etc.) in Boca in the 70's. The fights over funding, copyright, trademark etc. He knew what he had, but you have to realize Xerox was a photocopy company period and when they saw the modern office, they canned it as they saw it as the extinction of the photocopier and thus, Xerox. What a bunch of morons, but hindsight is always 20/20 and so their stupidity made people like Jobs and Gates billionaires.

Gates Jobs - great people that were destined to do great things on their own.

Xerox and like companies - destined to suck off the Gov't to do very little on their own.

My wife owned the Xerox building in Boca and later sold it - so I have a few stories as well.

Went to college with Dell who owned a bar. Got a phone call for 10-20k buy in. I denied but many went for it ... two guys still hold it at a value of 4 million.

It is all about timing and building a better mouse trap.

I am friends with some extremely wealthy people and all of them have spun off the corporate world that didn't see their potential.

I see your point - but Jobs Gates did more for this country than Xerox in volumes.
