Default Friends?

Somebody explain this "friend" thing to me on the site. I have had three people ask to be my "friend" and I said yes, if course, but have no idea what that means. I do not do any social networking except for this site, so is it a carryover from one of those other sites?

Taz,

Yes, it really isn't a high-value feature. Just a way for people to look at your profile and see you are friends with persons john, jane and harry etc.

Ed- Never have and never will own a BMW, but I do like Porsches. My first car was a 1957 356A, and I have enjoyed the other three I had. 69 911E, 69 911S, and 05 Boxster.

That car has everything ... the leather strap to fog covers which I can't make out what brand they are.

I bought a bunch of NOS Les Leston leather straps and fog covers for the Healey.

Great restoration!

Jimmy- Very nice 356B. Mine was a Normal. I think it actually said that on the car or had an N, kind of hard to remember because it was 44 years ago. No photos, unfortunately, and she was a pretty light blue color. Mine got about 40 mpg and 40 mpq. You could actually hold your hand behind the exhaust and oil would drip off it. But what can you expect for a $750, rusted out Porsche?

The one thing I can say after owning early Porsches, is you never fear oversteer again, because you lived with it every day. If the tail was not hung out, you were not trying hard enough.

By the way, BMWs are fine cars, I just do not want one, except maybe a 507 or an M1. In my dreams.

Thanx for the compliment, Taz. I have had this 356B for almost five years now. At the time, I wanted and early Porsche to contrast my 964 and 933, something about the whole stance, the way it rides ...has a whole charm of its own. As you mentioned, the steering, braking (drums) the "slow" speed it moves, ...all was refreshing.
I bought this car from a private owner in France, and yes, thru internet with no visual, no PPI (what can I say, seems like my learning curve is in line with the state of the economy). He was a meticulous individual taking care of rust the old fashioned, lead method; chose original color, carpet source, and so forth. The car was almost finished, but he ran out of money. The only flaw was the priming was questionable in couple spots with resultant paint bubbles. The engine was not restored at the time and soon after my purchase, one of the crankshaft was no good (cracked) and I had to replace them (parts are expensive, this is not a VW as some people think and profess). All in all, it is a fun car to own. Just looking at the makes you feel a bit happy. w/ smiles Jimmy
PS. The pics show when it arrived at the port of Yokohama.
PPS. Sorry, I cannot seem to upload pics, only one went thru, it seems.

Jimmy- You got a really nice one. One advantage of the early 356s was that many parts (not engine parts, as you discovered), were common with the VW. I remember my generator going out (I thought) and I ordered a new one from JC Whitney. It showed up as a brand new Bosch unit with cosmoline still on it. $40. Turns out the problem with the generator (these were still 6 volt systems) was that the 40 miles per quart had me adding oil very frequently, and the generator was just below the oil filler, so.... Generators do not work well when you drip oil into their guts. I also ordered a new headlight unit that was also common with the VW, and it was something like $12 and an exact replacement. The good old days.

That 60 DIN hp engine did not have enough torque to pull the fuzz off a dandelion, but she would show her heels to most of the 60s factory hot rods in the twisties. Took a long time to gain speed, but you could keep what you gained pretty easily.

I was going to Clemson at the time, one of several schools that threw me out for what I thought were minor transgressions. No sense of humor.

That is funny, Taz. Inertia at work !
The engine certainly can hardly be called exciting, but for some strange reasons, I kinda like the rythmic, comforting, almost put you to sleep motor sound. Oh well. w/ smiles Jimmy
