Default Point of Facebook?

I guess I’m not too bright…but what on earth do you do with a facebook account?

I’ve had handful of invitations sitting in my inbox for what seemed like forever so today I registered……and after about 20 minutes of staring at it I deleted the account because I couldn’t figure out that hell to do with it or why I would want it?

What am I missing? I just don't get it??

I have almost every family member on that 24/7. All sides of my family and with their friends etc. it's over 100.

I have no use for it and with the searches being made and me with a BI that I must maintain, I have cancelled that, twitt, and linkln or whatever that was.

Not to mention the constant Farmville and non-sense stuff and then the invites from the young 18-somethings who I am sure would have landed me in jail, I could not want any use of it.

I'm with you here. It's just another fad that wastes your time. Like that twitter thing too. Who wants to know what anyone is doing 7/24. I guess it's a maturity thing. If I want to contact old friends I call them or send them an email. It is funny when people loose their job because of what the post on these sites. Then again it will stay with you for ever.

You haven't missed much IMO. I stay away from facebook and other contact platform monsters of the sort just like I stay away from marriage. It's all unnecessary commitment.

I don't even keep my mobile phone on since a couple of years back. During half of my life there was no mass mobile phone culture. I remember it was awesome, therefore I continue like before. I keep it switched off in a pocket when I'm driving in case I have a break down, and when I switch it on there is definitely no facebook on it!

Stay away from it, it's a freedom stealer! (just my personal viewpoint)

The facebook thing made no sense to me at all ...Until.... I found all my Navy buddies from 30 years ago. We've set up a semi secure FB page and have been reminiscing about all the trouble we caused. 2 different ships with nearly 500 guys sharing memories that continually make me laugh in amazement. Its now being documented exactly why I'm going to Hell.

I would have agreed with you but now I'm having WAY to much fun and can't wait to see the next story posted every day.

I have Facebook to chat with friends instead of constantly calling, playing phone tag. To me it’s like email. I post pictures and so do my friends and we keep in touch this way. When I bought my car, instead of going to see everyone, I posted pictures....like on the forum here. Some people are social butterflies, some; once in a while others are not.

It all depends what kind of person you are. But I am careful on what can be searched on me. As for cell phone, I can understand but I have to keep it open, my wife loves phones because she is not a PC woman, can’t even send an email, she now loves her new BB and now uses 3 channels to talk to me (email, chat and phone). I have 2 cell phones, personal and work BB, those drive me crazy, ringing all the time. But I have it for my wife and humour her because she likes it.

I like Facebook but only have a few friends....not even like real life where I have none....lol

You can hide all the games and crap like Farmville. Great way to connect with old friends and let people know how your doing. You can make it as private as you want. Get a kid to show you how. You don't have to use your real name. Easy way to share pics or video with friends and familly and a great way to organize get togethers and invites.

I just posted this pic a friend took of me yesterday. All my old friends that saw me do this all the time 30 years ago got a kick out of it.

Pretty hard for anyone that is looking at this thread to be saying FB is a useless waste of time. The same could be said for all except the tech/information threads on this site.

Now if you log onto FB you can see my pics from 30 years ago when I did the same tricks and more only I stood straight up going down the road with my arms folded

Nope you are brighter than most, you are missing nothing, in fact you now will have more time on your hands.

It was developed as an easy way to meet people, if you do not care about that then don't worry about it, life is better without FB.

Some have good points as in it is easy to meet up with old friends, there is a reason why most are old friends

Ha this is funny because I just opened up an account a couple of weeks ago!
Just for my car hobby/friends though. I still dont see the point really, but it's a good way to keep in the loop about car stuff. Heck I didn't even use my real name and I have no need to find people or ex's from the past or them find me! Who know's what could come of that. Don't care for the drama.

I do find it's like the news. Quick entertainment like Ferrari, Top Gear, Auto mags etc. Instead of going to all there websites there all right there for me to see the latest news and info and one click away if I want more.

Cheers

Just a sidenote and a personal opinion, but here in Japan, you see so many people occupied with their cellulars. They are like that when walking, riding trains and buses, literally everywhere possible. I am far removed from that and I find it real strange and cannot understand this behavior. w/ smiles Jimmy

Yes, you do have a point about the old friends thing. I have received over 20-30 friend request from people I went to school with. Most of who I didn't like and most if not pretty much all of them treated me like shit, made fun of me because I was chubby and not as good looking as I guess back then...Tom Cruise.

One even sent me an email after her sending 3 requests and me refusing them as to why I didn't accept. I told her I only had crappy memories of her and her friends "the cool gang" treating me like garbage and talking down to me all the time in high school. So why would I want her or anyone in my life now? because FB is cool? I dont think so. Maybe that's why I worked real hard before my 16th b-day and had a cool car at 16 and they didn't, I was a loner, worked on my cars and I guess developped a true passion for them.

I stay in contact with a few people who used to post lots here around the time I got banned and they barely post here anymore. I dont ask anyone here to be on my "Friend list" unless they ask me to be on theirs because most have a negative reaction to FB or want to stay invisible to the Internet world (even if they flash in their Fcars....hehehe). One has to remember, everything is what you make of it.

I have but a handfull of people I know and keep in touch with and that's it. I use it for me and dont let "it" use me.

Not meaning to be insulting but why would I or anyone else want to see this picture or one 30 years ago. Just like this site if you get hacked you get all of your personal info put out on the web. There is no such thing as having a protected account. I do find it interesting that some people spend as much time on a daily basis updating their FB accounts. Even being retired I don't have maybe more then an hour a day to spend on my web chat sites. I played golf with a guy that had to send out a twitter after every hole. I still don't get it but maybe I'm just to old. I still have a flip style cell phone.

This is what makes this world go round, I dont like golf, I play once every 3 years because of a fundraiser tourament, I'm told I'm good and should play all the time. It's not really for me and to be honest kind of a waste of my time. But some live for it just like some dont like exotics and would only drive American Muscle cars. As well, retired people dont think like all the other different age groups and vise versa so who is right? nobody......

Like I said, whatever you do, do it for yourself not for others and dont let "it" control you.

As for the picture, I think it's totally cool, if we had been friends and he did that all the time back then, I would think it's cool he did it now. This is just like going to a friends house and them showing you pictures of their trip to Italy or France or Cuba (I'm Canadian we can go to Cuba). The only difference is you dont have to go to their house and drink coffee for an hour doing it.....LOL

Jagguy, you are basically saying you dont own a camera? pretty funny

Me too and I’m thinking that is part of the issue since the flip phone means I don’t text either. I’ve talked to a couple friends the last few days and the people using FB the most seem to all be doing it from their phones.

The other issue someone mentioned that I hadn’t thought about is I just don’t have any old “friends” I have any interest in finding I don’t think, at least I can’t think of any. I think I’ve I kept in touch with any actual friends I’ve made along the way …so I guess the reason I don’t “get” FB is that I’m just not sociable enough to understand it.

Really??? How can you say that???
I dont believe that for one minute.....

What about this site...this is a social place....you have been a member for less than a year June 2010 and have 1241 posts. So 331 days at an average of 3.75 posts a day.......so in a week a total of 26.25 posts...I do FB a few times a week and dont even remotely come close to what you do here.....

I'm not saying there is something wrong but you have chosen a different way to communicate and be social with people.

So in my book, I think you are a very sociable person....and that's cool

You also have to remember, most dont have a huge passion for something like we do, some have many little ones and dont choose to go on multiple forums here and there because it might not be worth it for them but maybe the social aspect of talking with people about anything and nothing is.....hey Seinfeld was a show based on nothing and ran for eternity....
