Default Collectable Cars 1980-Present

I was having a lively discussion with a friend yesterday on which were the most collectable cars of the "modern" era (post 1980). Clearly rarity (# built), performance stats, racing association, and manufacturer are all key obvious factors. Personally I also think the driving experience, useability, and maintenance cost (and how easy is it to maintain) also have a large impact.

So far the list is:

Ferrari Enzo
Ferrari F50
Ferrari 288 GTO
Pagani Zonda
Porsche 959
Jaguar XJR-15
Porsche Carrera GT
Ferrari F40
Jaguar XJ220

Others? Comments?

I am surprised that the XJR-15 i so reasonably priced now given its rarity as well as its original price.

Are you restricting this to super cars?

Not at all. The only criteria is collectability.

I have to be honest, i'm not a big fan of post 1980 cars, except for the super cars. i will have to think on that one.

some of the mopars come to mind like the prowler. maybe the ford gt. not a big fan of the corvettes, but i'm sure there is a rare collectible in there somewhere. I'm sure there is a mustang variant or two that will stand the test of time. Forget the name of that weird chevy truck that came out. might not be collectible but i bet they didn't sell many. funny, i just googled "ugly chevy truck" and it came up! the SSR. Anyway, a few off the top of my head.

I think you have to include the original Countach, it was such a radical design for it's day. It may not demand a lot of money, but I think it will always be "collectable".

Yes and no, I would agree that the 1st generation Countach is quite collectable but it is a pre 1980s car, hence not eligible for this list.

Really not sure about the Diablo. While it is a "significant" car, it really did not establish a new benchmark for performance, design, materials, or technology. I would put it in the same category as the Testarossa.

Boxer, I think the McLaren F1 would be one to add to your list.

High mileage, low compression, and missing on a few cylinders.....just like my cars.

It will be interesting to see if the Aston One Seven Seven becomes a collectable. I doubt the Veyron will be 15 years from now.

I guess really you have to mean how collectible. Certainly a diablo will be more collectable than a testarossa and less than an f1. but i think all of them will be collectible in the future. Meaning, demand will outstrip supply and this will become more acute as time goes by. collectible.

DeTomaso Mangusta gets my vote. Absolutely gorgeous lines, only about 400 made, and around 200 known survivors.

Any idea how many road legal Saleen S7s were produced?

I remember reading once that it was around 200 or so but dont quote me on that. They are all hand made so I am sure it was not in the thousands. They mostly work on Mustangs applying different power packages as a company.

It's pretty much all I know about them which is not much.
