When I visited Capristo’s factory a couple of months ago in Germany for my exhaust upgrade, he and his team were working very actively in creating new Carbon Fibre parts for the F458. Antiono, as always, had a very ambitious initial objective: reduce the total weight of the Italia by 100kg. Now, he changed his objective to 150kg (330 lbs)! I saw him working on his own car which he’s using more to work on than to drive it . It was also interesting to discover a partly dismantled Italia and see a bit what’s behind the scenes. Here are some pictures of his Italy on which already many parts have been removed to be processed by the R&D department to scan&capture the exact shapes. Some parts have been improved like the engine airbox to allow an improved air flow. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() On this picture, you can see Antonio in person working on the new carbon fibre prototype of the diffuser. ![]() As always, he wants only the best of the best products, thus, all his parts are made of 100% carbon fibre and are manufactured in an autoclave. They are then covered with transparent lacquer and are polished. So far, Capristo succeeded to reduce the overall weight by 60kg replacing many parts with the carbon fibre equivalent. This includes also his new exhaust system for the Italia as well as a lithium battery. Here is already a long list of available parts : http://www.capristo.de/en/exhaustsystems/ferrari/ferrari-458-italia/carbonteile-fuer-458.html But I found it very impressive that he succeeded to replace the entire front bonnet with carbon fibre parts. These parts have really very complex shapes. ![]() ![]() Some examples of weight reductions : - Diffuser: stock=6.1kg, CF=1.8kg : gain of 4.3kg - Engine bay panels: stock=9.8kg, CF=4.3kg: gain of 5.5kg - Wheelhouses: stock=13.8kg, CF=6.2kg: gain of 7.6kg - Underbody panels: stock=14.2kg, CF=7.4kg: gain of 6.8kg To reach his new challenge of a total reduction of 150kg, there is still a long way to go but Capristo is already working on the next steps which includes the bumpers, doors, carbon rims etc. It’s just interesting to realise how challenging it is to reduce the car weight by “only” 150kg...while improving the overall look. I was truly impressed by this. Last edited by StefVan; 11-23-2011 at 11:02 AM. Reason: Corrected title |

A couple of pictures from conception to the prototype molt and then to the final product. Capristo is not afraid to show his CAD pictures of his work (some will understand what I mean here )The stock part weight of the luggage compartment is 12.8Kg while the carbon fibre part weight is 5.9Kg. This is a gain of 6.9Kg at the front of the Italia. |

Some other pictures of CF parts mounted on the Italia. Now, the 458 starts looking really stunning isn't it?

Some very complex parts like the wheel mudguards and all the underbody panels and parts. Watch the smallest details of these parts.

Carbon fibre airboxes which are slightly larger and improved shape to offer a better airflow.

And I left the best for the end Real 100% carbon fibre 20" wheels!!! I would never have guessed that this would have been possible. But it looks like nothing can stop Antonio .

I think he might even be in with a chance of stealing 360Trev's "slimmer of the year" award!

| I am to scared to even contemplate the price of a set of those rims....given the complexity and safety requirements for a critical item such as a wheel rim I guess only the "grown ups" will be able to afford it.

How will the reduction of weight affect the car's balance and handling?
