| Ferrari FF gets 875bhp with E85 conversion Now, this doesn't make sense to me. I have been able to make a power jump in boosted cars by taking advantage of the higher resistance to knock and cranking up the pressure but on a NA v12 with no other mods and getting 225 hp? That doesn't add up. |

Jay- If you actually optimized an engine to run on ethanol, there would be some hp advantages, but it would take some pretty severe mods like higher compression pistons, advanced timing on the ignition and camshafts, and much larger orifices or flow rate for the injectors. What they do not mention is that fuel economy would go down up to 33%, and that ethanol costs way, way more than gasoline. Most of the costs of gasoline in Europe are taxes, however, which is why diesel is cheaper than gasoline there and more expensive than premium here. If the bureaucrats decided to tax ethanol lightly somewhere (Brazil, maybe?), there might be an advantage. A stunt, for sure. Oh and I have switched from 93 oct to E85 on a turbo Mitsubishi and went from 340hp to 420 because I could crank up the boost and tune for. But the fuel allows you to make other changes, it is an enabler not capable of its own to have the ecu say "Huh..... add timing and lets make another 200 hp" I guess this shop is just hoping to make a quick buck. | |
