Default BBi Exhaust Refurbishment

I recently visited with my friend Italo and as things normally go we landed up talking F cars which is a subject matter close to both our hearts.
To cut a long story short we proceeded to the garage to admire the BB and Daytona.

Taking a closer look at the BB I noticed that although it had come out of a recent major service the exhaust looked a little peculiar and rusted in the area between manifolds and silencer boxes.

The silencers are S/S and the manifolds have been ceramic coated whilst belts were done on the car.
Upon closer examination we noticed that the gaskets had not been replaced when the exhaust system was sent in for coating and the main dealer) he now no longer is an authorised F dealer) had merely masked the gaskets and instructed the coaters not to remove them.
With the gaskets not being changed there were exhaust leaks from 3 of the joints and the car did not sound as crisp as it normally does.

We decided to rectify the leaks and basically overhaul the system and ceramic coat it properly.

Here is a photographic record of the work we did.

The rear valance has been removed.

Photos are taken as at the time of stripping. I must confess this is one clean car.

Alexander- Looks like she really needed some help and you have made good progress on getting there. Ferrari actually makes a jig for the late V8s for getting the exhaust pipes centered in the outlets. You could probably make one out of wood if you wanted to, provided there is enough adjustment on the system to make it worthwhile.

Man, that's a good looking BBi! Can't really see the Daytone but I expect she'll be the same. Iconic combo!

The ceramic coating is to my knowledge not original. Am I wrong or do you not mind originality for the sake of having them last longer? Mind you - they do look period as the racing machines were cermamic coated in those days (e.g. BB512LM).

Onno both cars are mint. You may recall the Daytona pic I had posted some time ago and mentioned that it was a multiple South African champion well the 512 is a multiple SA class champion. David knows the cars and I suspect he will know Italo as well from the SA F car club.
The ceramic coating is certainly not original to the car but we have tried to get the colour as close to darn it.
It was predominantly done to keep the car clean looking.

Terry there is very little to no adjustment on the system. So one is dependant on how good the system is from factory jigs.

The rear heat shield removed as well as the 2 centre boxes.

This is how clean it was and please remember that this car is a regular weekend driver.

The offending exhaust manifolds.

I was absolutely surprised to see that the "previous" main dealer would deliver such shoddy work to one of his long time customers.

Having had my car serviced there I suspected that he cut corners but man this is ridiculous.

Jimmy you are dealing with an Italian and a Greek.
Coffee is a religion to both of us although the Camels and Zippo are mine alone.

My friend is now 70 years young and both he and I were rolling on the floor manhandling those heavy boxes and feeling like teenagers

I think later on that night we felt aches in muscle groups we thought we did not have.

Manifolds and boxes back from ceramic coating and ready to be installed.

The car was being cleaned during this time by my friends trusted right hand man.
He goes by the name of Lucky and he has been helping Italo with the preparation of the car for competitions for many years now.

SS fasteners and washers with copper/brass nuts.
Manifolds are now installed and in a few days I will have shots of the completed system.

As an afterthought what an easy car to work on

Just fabulous. It's like being curled up for my favourite soap. If I was a woman, and liked soaps....
