Hi all,

as mentioned in the #17977 thread (Restoration of #17977), Boxer #18431 is on its way to the Netherlands to be restored by me.

It is now more than 2 months since I reported that news, but only yesterday did I get some positive news: this is where she was yesterday (see below)!

There were some interesting tussles going in the background that caused us to lose our allotted container space. But now, ETA is Monday and after clearing customs and paying import duty she'll go to my specialist for inspection. When I was at the Monaco auction the guy importing the car for me told me she was in better shape than the Boxer for auction there, which is great news as I did not think the Monaco car was bad at all! I bought the car sight unseen as it was such a bargain opportunity, so it will be a bit of a surprise as to what we get. Also - the car has been standing for more than a decade so who knows what we'll find. But at least it was standing at a Ferrari dealership so we may be pleasantly surprised.

In the meantime, I'm still considering spending a little money on my RHD Boxer before I sell her on, just to get her running well. Interest in 365's in Britain seems to be increasing which is good news. I'm not in a hurry to sell the car, so we'll see what happens. But if anyone is interested, let me know. It is a good car with a good history file, and very good mechanically. Just needs a bit of TLC to be fully enjoyed.

Hi all, I forgot to update this thread. A couple of weeks ago I inspected the car. At the moment, my specialist is making a full inventory of what needs to be done. But the inspection revealed the chassis is in perfect shape and the interior to me indicates that the mileage (42,000 km) is genuine. There are no major issues but the car really needs a lot of care and attention!

I'm a bit disappointed that a car that was in a major European collection came without any documentation. I did check at the source (with Kroymans), but there was nothing in their archives. I just don't understand people like that. And there are other things that indicate this car has not been loved. Some idiot drilled a hole and mounted a cheap ugly lock on the glove compartment! The original tool set (the square box that is mounted over the right front wheel) is missing, and there are some other niggles as well such as the prancing horse missing from the front grille. On the plus side, we think the engine is looking very solid.

Anyway - I've been doing some thinking and I've decided that although the car will be fully restored I'm making it my focus to become a car to enjoy. The restoration will be concours quality but I am not going to fuss over maintaining the original colour scheme, I will change the interior, and I won't bother with chasing up toolkits or other things like that.

To restore and cherish, this is a lesser candidate than my RHD car. But to restore and drive, it is a solid car for little money. So, I'm still happy with that. I think I'll reset the odometer to 00000 and start making my own history with this car. My aim is Targa Florio next year! Don't know if we will make that, but let's see.

I deeply understand your kind of disappointment after you described those flaws with the car. As I believe to know you a little and as I know that you are a person with a huge knowledge in the area of Ferrari's and Ferrari history, it came as a surprise to me that you bought a second 365 BB without knowing if the car comes with a documented history or if you are able to organize that history by yourself (or i.e. thru Marcel Massini). Even the tool box is replacable but I would wonder if you would not have checked that on a PPI basis or at least as a contractual matter and prerequisite. I sincerely hope you will forgive me my directness.
As I see it now, you have 2 365 BB, the first one you bought gave you lots of bothering (Remember Fled1). As I understand you will try to sell this car. Secondly, you have a LHD 365 BB, which you will totally restore and thereby spend a huge sum to have it in your style. That will still not create the missing history link after all. I understand you want to "recalibrate" that odometer to "0000" to "create" your own history. I understand this inspiration...but honestly I believe it will not work because history is not created by turning back the odometer. On the other hand depending how you want to use the car, history may not be the most important factor at all.
But when you choosed and purchased your fantastic 330 GTC, you approached the market very differently. You have been writing about the older man selling it and how much you appreciated the history of the car and how well it was kept, also regarding to its history file.
Naturally, therefore I believe you may should approach the 365 BB path the same way. (Again, I hope you will forgive me my directness). You will spend probably tons of money on that 365 BB until its correct (I do not know but I would assume so). So the game is open and there is always a way out. Are you sure that restoring this 2nd BB is the right way to go? If yes, congratulations for the time, effort and money involved and yes then its the right way for you. The 365 BB in general is a fantastic driving machine.

But I must tell you this story: Before I bought the F40, I fell over an add of a quite expensive 365 BB on sale. As I'm very "curious" and always interested in those histories (as you are) I called the owner, a 65 year old man who owned the car for 35 years, the car was first delivered to Peter Schetty, the Swiss racing driver and later Ferrari team manager. Peter Schetty also won the world championship on the famous 212 Montagnia Ferrari in 1969 winning 11 of 12 races (I guess he did not attend the 12th. race). As to my knowledge, Mr. Schetty received that car as a gift from Enzo Ferrari himself. Well I vsisted the seller and have seen a 365 BB in original condition, grey metallic and just gorgeous as I never have seen a 365 BB before. Besides, the original pouch, all books, dealership card and all details where there, original but in as new condition, present and with the car! Additionally, the seller showed me a big photo album from when he was 30 and did the services with a former well known Ferrari factory mechanic.
Understandingly, such a car has a slightly different price than a "quick deal", but such a car for a real 365 BB enthusiast as I rate you Onno, would be possibly be a option as well.

GOOD ! Also if the engine as only done 42000 km and doesn't smoke oil ,I think you shouldn't open it for nothing ... send the carbs to a spécialist and tune them well.
Inspecting the gearbox is more important .
As the Boxer will be completly restored, the past (invoices etc...) of the car won't be so important +you'll have a lot of brand new invoices ,take a lot of pics during the restoration "it speaks" more (as we say in French..).
Also I think you shouldn't put the odometer on 000 000 ,42 000 THAT'S the history of the car.

Your energy and passion is amazing, Onno.

As I mentioned in some other threads before, few years ago, this one Japanese was an avid fan of 365BB and he found one in Europe, had it totally restored in Swiss (at Mr. Ruf's shop), and had the car air transported to Tokyo. On the 4th pics I don't understand why the clutch master cylinder can be seen .
Do you have another closer photo ?
