Was the BB originally all red or was the lower panel black?

Looking good, Boxer512BB.

@Daytona73 - all 365BB's had holes in the strips. 99% sure all of them were leather, not vinyl.

That's true .(Of course the first serie with the beige fabric is another story ...)

Why would those of the Daytona and 512BB be vinyl (plastic) and not the 365BB ?

Onno ,If you could post close a photo of 365 BB original strip It would be great.

..............................

boxer 512bb your car looks very beautiful.Carbs BB are the best !

Do you have photos of the engine ?Did the previous owners removed the "useless" side silencers ?

A car 100% Original is great too ,but the music is softer ...

I do not know the correct answer to that Boxer but the NACA vents at the rear are painted black which makes me think it originally had a black base. I have seen on other totally red cars that this NACA area is sometimes painted in red and sometimes in black.

Did totally red cars come from the factory with black painted NACA vents?

On the NACA vents, I don't think so.

I checked with HvL, interior specialist and owner of a 512BB. The strips are vinyl, you were correct. This is what happens when you haven't seen your car in 9 months...

Regarding the NACA ducts, I agree with Boxer.

When you restore the seats you can easily unstich the strips and reuse them because they don't age like the old leather.

Onno ,You should enjoy more often your 365 BBs!

Don't you want to simply drive the last one (and not restore it)?
A full restored one can be stressy ,affraid of rain, mud ,stone chips in the front etc ... wich ruins all the efforts ...

Regarding the NACA ducts I agree with you and Boxer.

I think Full red was an option for 512BB, I have seen more often BBi with full red original from factory.

Full red was a factory option but not very common.

Thanks guys, as usual you have been of great help. It appears the jury has decided that the NACA ducts are not original in black, so i will have them painted red. I guess in black they do stand out, but being the same colour as the car will look more original.

Yes Daytona73 the side silencers have been removed. Probably as is common one final pipe to the exhaust tip comes off the top large silencer and one comes off the bottom one.

I read in a Tech Tip for the Boxer that the Auotomaic electric choke SHOULD NOT BE USED !!! Any time in my brief ownership of my BB i have used the choke on a cold start and everytime it has started beautifully. The owners manual suggests using it so why should i not use it??

I do agree that the black inserts in the seats appear to be vinyl, one is split unfortunatly, so i think i will renew them all, with the holes.

Photos of the engine will be up soon.

Cheers and thanks again, your input is appreciated.

If you don't wish to present you car to concours "fights" you should not bother about the NACA vents color if you like them black.

Here is an official pics of the 512BB with the NACA in a different color.

My ex 512BB had it black too (and even the two front grills !) and I liked it like that.

If your car was mine ... I would just paint the hood with a little more black .Like on this photo (they left the factory painted like this).

And if you want a Platinum concours car your external mirrors should be removed (DON'T DO IT ), they are nice but belong to BBi (they are rare and NLA with the little Ferrari badge on them).
Originals are "Vitaloni Californian" for 512BB.

........

I never use the choke on my carbs cars (my mecanics told me they don't need it,It fouls plugs... ),for the BB ,I put the fuel pumps on ,wait 30 sec (until the "tic tic" of the pumps goes slower),pump the accelerator to the floor 4 times and release, then CONTACT .Turn the key not longer than 4 seconds for the starter each time, several times if needed.

I look forward to seeing the engine.

The LHD Boxer I've bought has been sitting in the basement of Kroymans' garage since 1997. I'm sure it's not going to be a reasonable driving car right now. Besides that, I am now completely converted to the philosophy of the previous owner of my 330GTC: you get the car to be 100% perfect and then you drive it. This way the car is easy to maintain properly and she always runs when you want her to. A bit of road rash is not a problem, it gives her character. My 330GTC has some road rash, you just make sure it doesn't get too bad and have her touched up once in a while. If you use the best guys out there, it will be impossible to tell that it had a touch-up.

Good philosophy, better than restored cars which come on a golf green (for the show, they'll never see a road ) by truck and go back home by ...........truck !

Drive 'em!!

From the registry your car left the factory red.
Which are the colors passing through you head for the restoration ? (you probably have two or three prefered for BBs)
The same previous choice of blue ?

I have never used the choke on any of the BBs. The gentleman I bought the first one from, suggested never touching it. Given that it was the 8th Ferrari he had owned, he had a long racing history, and knew the cars inside and out, was glad to heed his advise.

Hello,

Thanks for this thread guys. Very informative.
I have recently purchased a 512 BB here in the UK. It's a nice car, but not a concours winner. There are plenty of small jobs for me to chip away at in between enjoying it (great owners club run today in Ayrshire), and I'm determined to take my time, make steady progress and keep a realistic perspective of my own capabilities, and when to call in the experts.
One of the first things that keeps catching my eye is the black spoiler (on top of the engine cover) which has quite a few scratches on it, definitely into the plastic itself, not just the paint.
Any suggestions/tips/warnings for rectifying/painting? It is sufficiently bad for me to be confident I can tackle it without making it any worse!

Very nice SCM.
I never realised that the 512 didn't have the prancing horse on the rear...

Lovely garage also
