87 Mondial Rear View Mirror

Please help, I took my rear view mirror apart, and can't seem to get it back together!

There is a ball socket that sits in the mirror (allowing it to rotate) and there is a metal band that sits around the ball socket housing to keep it tight. Without the metal band the mirror is too loose. I've tried and tried, but can't get that metal band back around the housing. Is there a special tool or what's the trick. Surely one of you experts can save me from myself.

Did you ever figure this one out? A friend of mine has a similar problem with a car he just bought.

Then again, maybe he bought his car from you!

Just kidding of course. But any information you could pass along would be greatly appreciated.
